‘Eaters Brock tabbed

Evan Brock, who was 6-4 with a 3.14 earned-run average as a freshman pitcher at UC Irvine in 2010, has been named an alternate on the collegiate national team trials roster.

Trials are scheduled Tuesday through July 11 at the USA Baseball Training Complex in Cary, N.C.

Players will compete for 22 roster spots.

Brock earned all-regional honors after striking out nine in 8 1/3 innings, spanning two appearnaces, at the Los Angeles Regional at UCLA. He earned the win in a 4-3 triumph over LSU that eliminated the then-defending NCAA champions.

Opponents batted a paltry .162 against the right-hander, who struck out 62 in 63 innings and allowed just 34 hits.

He also posted one save for the Anteaters.

After the trials and a training period, Team USA will play a five-game series against Korea, then one game against a team of Japanese collegiate all-stars at Rosenblatt Stadium in Omaha, Neb. on July 21.

The team then travels to Taipei, Taiwan for a four-game series against Chinese Taipei beginning July 25.

The schedule concludes at the FISU World University Championships in Tokyo, Japan from July 30 to Aug. 7.

Former UCI Coach Dave Serrano, the head man the last three seasons at Cal State Fullerton, will serve as the pitching coach for Team USA, which will be guided by Utah Coach Bill Kenneberg.

OCC camp offered

Orange Coast College men’s  basketball coach Steve Spencer will head the OCC Skills Basketball Camp, for boys and girls ages 7 to 17 from July 26 through 30 at the OCC gym.

Daily sessions for campers ages 7 through 12 will be from 9 a.m. to noon.

Sessions for ages 13 to 17 will be from 1 to 4 p.m.

Participants will receive instruction in fundamentals and competitiveness in a positive learning atmosphere.

The fee is $125 for each camper, and $75 for an additional sibling.

A Camp T-shirt is included, but participants should wear basketball shoes, a T-shirt and shorts and also bring a water bottle.

OCC men’s assistant coaches Duy Tran and Steve Tamanaha will also provide instruction.

Breakers’ charity night July 21

The Newport Beach Breakers will be holding their Junior Charity night July 21, as they face the Springfield Lasers as The Tennis Club in Newport Beach.

The night will serve as an opportunity to bring in several children’s charities from throughout Orange County. Tickets can be purchased for a $5 donaton to Hoag Hospital at the match, or by calling (714) 352-6301.

The match is a rematch of the 2009 Western Conference Final, won by Springfield. It was supposed to be played at the Billie Jean King Tennis Center in Long Beach, but will instead be held at The Tennis Club.
