Lions trio honored

Vanguard University senior designated hitter and catcher Eric Krzysiak and junior pitcher Robert Purpura have been named All-Golden State Athletic Conference in baseball.

Junior right fielder Brandon Young represents the Lions on the conference’s Gold Glove Team.

Krzysiak hit .439, leading the Lions in hits (86), slugging (.633) and triples (four). He hit six home runs, drove in 44 runs and had 12 doubles. His 22 extra-base hits ranked second on the team.

Purpura, who appeared in 17 games and made five starts, had a team-leading seven saves to go with his 2-1 record and a 4.50 earned-run average. Purpura, a transfer from Irvine Valley College, struck out 33, walked 15 and allowed 53 hits in 44 innings. Opponents batted .285 against him.

Krzysiak and Purpura are the first Lions to earn all-conference laurels since 2006. The duo helped lead the Lions to a 34-20 record and the program’s first NAIA Tournament appearance since 1985. Young had a .979 fielding percentage with two errors and one assist.
