High School Baseball: Quintet shines in section

Corona del Mar High senior catcher Beau Attyah received first-team All-CIF Southern Section Division III honors in baseball, while Sage Hill School senior pitcher/third baseman A.J. Wolfson and senior catcher Dusty Orrantia made the first team in Division VI.

Estancia senior pitcher Marc DeFrenza was a second-team selection in Division IV.

Sage Hill senior pitcher Alex Jimenez received second-team recognition in Division VI.

Attyah hit. 400 and led CdM (11-17) in five offensive categories: home runs (six), runs batted in (29), hits (38), slugging percentage (.653) and runs (24). Attyah also had six doubles and was four for six in stolen-base attempts.

Wolfson, Orrantia and Jimenez played vital roles in lifting Sage Hill (20-6) to the semifinals of the CIF Southern Section Division VI playoffs for the first time in the program’s history. With the trio, the Lightning recorded their most wins in a season.

Wolfson, who earned the Academy League MVP award, belted a school-record six home runs and batted .420 with 31 RBIs. He scored 32 runs and had 10 doubles.

As a pitcher, Wolfson went 8-1 with a 2.24 earned-run average. The right-hander struck out 69 in 621/3 innings and threw one complete game.

Orrantia hit .370 with 32 RBIs, 14 doubles and he scored 24 runs.

Orrantia threw out more than 60% of runners trying to steal and committed only two errors.

Jimenez finished with an 8-3 record and a 1.82 ERA. In 621/3 innings, the right-hander struck out 46 and walked only 17. Jimenez tossed three complete games and saved two games.

Jimenez hit .380 with 10 RBIs, six doubles and he scored 24 runs.

DeFrenza helped Estancia (17-11) win its first league championship since 1991. DeFrenza was the winning pitcher when the Eagles clinched the Orange Coast League title in the regular-season finale.

DeFrenza, who was named the Orange Coast League MVP and Pitcher of the Year, finished with a 9-4 record.
