Briefs: Williams strikes again

Corona del Mar High striker Reed Williams has scored on the national stage.

The senior was one of a dozen boys’ soccer players making the ESPN RISE Winter All-American team after leading the Sea Kings to their first CIF Southern Section Division IV and CIF Southern California Regional Division II titles.

The UCLA-bound Williams totaled 32 goals and 12 assists. The Sea Kings finished 27-1-1 and ranked No. 2 in the country by ESPN RISE.

Other laurels Williams has received are the Gatorade California Boys’ Soccer Player of the Year and the CIF Southern Section Division IV Offensive Player of the Year.

ESPN RISE also recognized Williams as one of the premier players in California. He was one of three local players making the ESPN RISE All-State team.

CdM midfielder Brian Ford made the boys’ all-state team. The junior recorded 11 goals and four assists.

On the girls’ team, Newport Harbor senior Elizabeth Eddy earned a spot. Eddy, who is also a member of the PARADE All-American team, is bound for USC.

UCI’s Chin honored

John Chin, who starred as a senior for the UC Irvine men’s golf team in 2010, has added postseason honors.

Friday, he was named first-team All-American by Golfweek.

Earlier this week, he was named to the 2010 All-Nicklaus Team by the Golf Coaches Assn. of America.

Previously, he was named first-team All-American by PING.

Chin is the Anteaters’ only men’s golfer to earn All-American laurels in the program’s 33-year Division I history.

The three-time Big West Conference Golfer of the Year competes for the United States in the Palmer Cup, Thursday through Saturday at Royal Portrush Golf Club in Portrush, Northern Ireland.

He led UCI this season with a 70.05 average and 11 top-10 finishes (eight in the top five). He finished first in four tournaments, including winning his second Big West individual title. Chin ended the season ranked No. 1 in the Golfstat Cup and second in the Golfweek/Sagarin ratings.

Named for golfing great Jack Nicklaus, the All-Nicklaus team is comprosed of the top 24 players from Divisions I, II and III, as well as the NAIA and NJCAA.

Nicklaus, a former Big Ten and NCAA champion at Ohio State, has been a longtime supporter of collegiate and amateur golf.

Kim at U.S. Open

PEBBLE BEACH – Former UC Irvine men’s golfer Kenny Kim shot two-over-par 73 in the second round of the U.S. Open on Friday, after carding a 78 in his opening round on Thursday at Pebble Beach Golf Links.

Kim had three birdies Friday after collecting two on Thursday. He had problems with the par-five 14th hole, posting a double bogey Thursday and a triple bogey Friday.
