Briefs: CdM’s Ctvrtlik Co-MVP of Pacific Coast League
Corona del Mar libero earns share of Pacific Coast League’s top boys’ volleyball honor.
Corona del Mar High senior libero Erik Ctvrtlik received a share of the Pacific Coast League Most Valuable Player award after he helped the boys’ volleyball team repeat as the undefeated league champion.
Ctvrtlik is joined on the first team by three CdM teammates: junior middle blocker Tommy Brooks, junior outside hitter Joey Martino and senior middle blocker Ryan Clayton. The foursome led the Sea Kings (19-11, 10-0 in league) to the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs.
Ctvrtlik finished with 168 digs, 57 kills and 11 service aces. He also played in the 36th annual Dave Mohs Orange County High School All-Star Match for seniors.
Ctvrtlik, who shared the MVP honor with Irvine’s Brad Hankus, is bound for Vanderbilt University.
Brooks produced 177 kills and 67 blocks.
Martino recorded 256 kills, 81 digs, 43 blocks and 29 aces.
Clayton had 159 kills and 32 blocks.
CdM freshman setter Matt Ctvrtlik and sophomore outside hitter Ryan Moss were both second-team honorees.

Kawaguchi Co-MVP
Sage Hill School senior setter Kent Kawaguchi earned a share of the Academy League boys’ volleyball Most Valuable Player award, making it three straight seasons Kawaguchi has won the award.
Kawaguchi helped the Lightning (10-11, 8-2 in league) to a runner-up finish in league and the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs.
Kawaguchi finished with 392 assists, 202 digs, 130 kills, 63 service aces and 33.5 blocks. He shared the league MVP with St. Margaret’s senior Oliver O’Donnell.
Kawaguchi, who is bound for USC, played in the 36th annual Dave Mohs Orange County High School All-Star Match for seniors.
Sage Hill junior outside hitter Cameron Hall made the first team, and senior outside hitter Kyle Jaffe and junior libero Nicky Boulos were second-team performers.
Sage Hill sophomore middle blocker Zachary Drobenko received honorable mention.

Three Sailors net first-team laurels
Newport Harbor High senior middle blocker Kevin Rakestraw highlights one of three Sailors making the first-team All-Sunset League in boys’ volleyball.
Rakestraw, a 7-footer bound for Stanford, is a repeat first-team selection. Newport Harbor senior setter Steven Duhoux and junior outside hitter Peirce Ward are first-team picks for the first time.
Rakestraw helped Newport Harbor (21-9, 8-2 in league) to second place in league and the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs for the second straight season.
Rakestraw finished with 316 kills and 49 blocks, and he hit .405. He played in the 36th annual Dave Mohs Orange County High School All-Star Match for seniors. He made second-team all-league in basketball.
Duhoux started the season at opposite and then moved to setter. He totaled 564 kills, 115 kills and 47 blocks, and played in the Dave Mohs Orange County High School All-Star Match.
Ward finished with 223 kills and 24 blocks.
Newport Harbor junior libero Nic Sargeant, junior middle blocker Clay Carr and senior opposite Scott Russell each made the second team.
Huntington Beach seniors Matt Butler and Andrew Tenbrink shared the Sunset League Most Valuable Player award.

Tars’ duo earns first-team status
Newport Harbor High junior utility player Shaun Vetrovec and senior outfielder Drew Andary garnered first-team All-Sunset League accolades in baseball.
Vetrovec and Andary are two of a half-dozen Sailors that received recognition from league coaches. Junior first baseman Jake Norton, junior catcher Tk McWhertor, junior pitcher Connor Seabold and senior second baseman Taylor Parks each made the second team.
Newport Harbor finished 11-15, 3-12 in league, last place.
As a pitcher, Vetrovec went 5-4 with a 2.20 earned-run average. He struck out 38 in 47 2/3 innings.
Vetrovec also earned each of the Sailors’ league victories.
Vetrovec hit .317 with two home runs, 18 runs batted in and seven doubles.
Andary batted .312 with one home run, 12 RBIs, seven doubles and one triple. He had a .404 on-base percentage and scored 16 runs.
Andary started in right field in the Ryan Lemmon Showcase, a senior all-star game between the Sunset League and Century League. Coach Patrick Murphy said Andary hopes to walk on at the University of Nevada.
Fountain Valley junior Bock Lundquist earned the Sunset League Most Valuable Player award.
