Boog Powell, who starred at Orange Coast College as a freshman, and Timmy Lopes, a UC Irvine baseball signee expected to fill a void in the infield next season, have signed with their prospective professional teams after being selected in the Major League First-Year Player Draft last week.

Powell, a center fielder and leadoff man for the Orange Empire Conference champion Pirates, who advanced to the four-team state tournament, led OCC in batting average (.398), hits (76) and runs (49) on his way to first-team state and all-conference honors. He was taken in the 20th round by the Oakland Athletics.

Lopes was taken in the sixth round by the Seattle Mariners (No. 191 overall) out of Edison High.

UCI signees Andrew Potter (Arizona Diamondbacks) and Kevin Grendell (Baltimore Orioles), both pitchers, have also signed professional contracts.
