Mr. Irrelevant almost here

Share

With a lockout, there is no guarantee of an NFL season.

But a work stoppage is not affecting Irrelevant Week in Newport Beach.

Cheta Ozougwu, the last player chosen in the NFL Draft, is coming to town for the Irrelevant Week festivities, Monday through June 24.

Ozougwu will be Newport Beach’s special guest of honor after the Houston Texans drafted the defensive end out of Rice University with the 254th pick in April.

Irrelevant Week’s motto has always been doing something nice for someone for no reason. The man who started the tradition in 1976 is Newport Beach resident Paul Salata, a former NFL player.

“Everything’s bigger in Texas,” Salata said in a release. “So we’ll need to make sure this year’s Irrelevant Week is bigger than ever before. We’ll have the hat and the cattle!”

The celebration starts with an arrival beach party open to the public on Monday at the Newport Dunes Waterfront Resort, where Ozougwu will be showered with gifts. Also on Ozougwu’s schedule is a trip to Disneyland, followed by an Ozougwu roast at the All-Star Lowsman Banquet at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel and Spa, and then a boat race and barbecue for Ozougwu at the Balboa Yacht Club.

Funds raised at Irrelevant Week will support the Goodwill Fitness Center in Orange County.
