UCI alums try out

Five UC Irvine men’s water polo alums are competing for spots on the 13-man United States roster for the 2011 World University Games in Shenzhen, China, in August.

Kyle Baxter, Brandon Johnson, Matt Johnson, Kyle Kruip and Griffin Lerman all completed their UCI eligibility last fall. They have survived three evaluation periods and cuts for the World University Games roster that started with 42 players and has been whittled down to 22.

Lerman was a second-team All-American in 2010 while the Johnson twins received honorable mention.

The final training camp and team selection for the USA roster will be held at UCI, June 16-19. The team will consist of USA national team members that are currently in school or within two years of graduation.

UCI Coach Marc Hunt is the head coach of the USA team for the World University Games. He won gold as captain of the U.S. team at the 1993 World University Games in Buffalo, N.Y.

“I am proud to see the effort and work that these five young players have put forth in the tryouts,” Hunt said. “They all have the ability to make a run at the USA national team. They are just beginning their long march toward the Olympics.”

Former Anteaters Coach Ted Newland, who won 714 games and three national titles at UCI from 1966-2004, led the U.S. team to gold at the 1991 World University Games in Sheffield, England.

The five UCI representatives competed recently for the Newport Water Polo Foundation that placed fourth of 16 teams at the Fisher Cup.
