Baldoni leads Stanford to NCAA title

Stanford University sophomore goalie Kate Baldoni, a former Corona del Mar High standout, earned NCAA tournament Most Valuable Player honors as she led the Cardinal to their second straight national title May 13 at San Diego State.

Baldoni made 15 saves to help Stanford (26-2) claim a 6-4 win over USC. It was the Cardinal’s third women’s water polo national championship.

Baldoni made a total of 29 saves and allowed just nine goals in Stanford’s wins over Pomona-Pitzer, UC Irvine and USC.

The Stanford championship team also featured Catherine Carpenter (Newport Harbor) and Victoria Kennedy (Corona del Mar).

USC sophomore Kaleigh Gilchrist (Newport Harbor) earned all-tournament first-team honors. The Trojans also had locals Morgan Vickers (Newport Harbor, UC Irvine), Nicolina McCall (Newport Harbor), Colleen McCall (Newport Harbor) and Chelsea Silvers (Newport Beach native) on their team.
