High School Roundup: Sage Hill falls in marathon

VAN NUYS — The Sage Hill School baseball team took it to Sierra Canyon of Chatsworth in the first round of the CIF Southern Section Division 6 playoffs Thursday.

But Sean Adler came through for the Trailblazers to end the game in 10 innings as the Lightning’s season ended with a 2-1 loss.

Adler, who pitched all 10 innings, delivered a double to the gap in left-center field, providing the walk-off hit for Sierra Canyon at Birmingham Community Charter High in Van Nuys.

“It was a battle today,” Sage Hill Coach Danny Gonzales said in a phone interview. “I’m very proud of my guys.”

Sage Hill freshman pitcher Parker Reposa threw his max six innings because he had put in four innings in a 12-2 wild-card win over Hamilton on Tuesday.

Reposa gave up five hits and struck out one. The Trailblazers (14-4) scored an unearned run in the bottom of the first inning.

Kellen Ochi pitched the rest of the way for Sage (12-12-1), which received an at-large bid as the Academy League’s fourth-place team.

Sierra Canyon was the Delphic League champion.

Junior Max Strohman stepped up with an RBI single with the bases loaded in the first inning for the Lightning’s lone run.

Gonzales was impressed with Adler.

“The kid on the mound was a big dominant lefty,” Gonzales said. “He was throwing hard all game. He had good velocity on his fastball and he had a tight slider. He had our guys off balance. We had a couple opportunities here and there but we couldn’t cash in.”
