College Roundup: Anteaters win at Santa Barbara

UC Irvine 9, UC Santa Barbara 2

SANTA BARBARA — Junior pitcher Matt Summers worked seven strong innings and five Anteaters had multiple hits in the Big West Conference series opener Friday at UCSB.

Summers struck out six and allowed eight hits and two earned runs to improve to 8-2.

Senior third baseman Brian Hernandez went three for five with one run batted in and junior catcher Ronnie Shaeffer was three for four.

Senior Sean Madigan hit his first homer run of the season, while senior Drew Hillman (two RBIs) and junior Jordan Fox (one RBI) each had two hits for UCI (32-13, 11-5 in conference).

Junior Christian Ramirez drove in two runs and was one of seven ‘Eaters who contributed to UCI’s 14-hit attack.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

USC 14, UC Irvine 9

ANN ARBOR, Mich. — No. 7-ranked UC Irvine, the No. 5 seed, was tied with No. 4-ranked and No. 4-seeded USC through three quarters, but could not keep pace in the quarterfinals of the NCAA Championship on Friday at the University of Michigan.

UCI (21-9), playing in its first NCAA Tournament, will play No. 8-seeded Iona in the fifth-place semifinals on Saturday at 3 p.m.

Olivia Cummins and Jesse Cardey scored three goals each for UCI, which received two goals from Cortney Collyer and six saves from Lauren Davis.

USC (19-6), the two-time defending NCAA champion, scored the first four goals and seven of the first eight in the fourth quarter to pull away and advance to the semifinals.

Kaleigh Gilchrist and Nicolina McCall, both Newport Harbor High products, scored goals for the Trojans.

Mississippi 4, UC Irvine 1

LOS ANGELES — Junior Fabian Matthews posted the lone set victory for Anteaters in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Friday at the Los Angeles Tennis Center.

Matthews, a Corona del Mar High product, defeated Jonas Lutjen, 6-3, 6-3, at No. 3 singles.

UCI, in its second straight NCAA Tournament appearance, completes its season 19-8.

Ole Miss is 13-9.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Big West Championships

IRVINE — Senior Matt Lahti was second in the hammer throw and Brennan Halliday was third in the 3,000-meter steeplechase to lead UC Irvine on the first day of the two-day meet at UCI.

Lahti’s mark was 192 feet, 8 inches.

Halliday clocked a career-best nine minutes, 11.33 seconds, nearly 11 seconds ahead of teammate Andy Burich, who was fourth.

Charles Jock (800), Napoleon Greene (400 hurdles), Freddie Gladney (110 hurdles) and Chris Carson (200) advanced from the prelims to Saturday’s finals in their respective events.

UCI is fifth with 19 team points heading into Saturday. Long Beach State (76 points) leads. The first field event begins at 10 a.m. and the first running event will start at 3:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Big West Championships

IRVINE — Amber Sangster and Alisha Misiaita finished second and third, respectively, in the discus throw to lead UC Irvine athletes on Friday at UCI.

Sangster’s mark was 159 feet, 3 inches, while Misiaita threw 157-4.

Madeline LeDuc was fifth in the long jump (19-31/4).

UCIs Amber Middleton (100-meter hurdles) and Sanmisola George (100 meters) advanced out of prelims Friday to Saturday’s finals.

Middleton’s time of 13.96 seconds ties for the second-best time in school history.

UCI’s 18 team points put it in seventh place, 46 behind first-place Cal State Northridge.
