High School Roundup: Cochran qualifies first in discus

CIF Southern Section Division 2 prelims

MOORPARK — Newport Harbor High senior Ethan Cochran qualified first in the discus and second in the shot put Saturday at Moorpark High to advance to the finals next week at Mt. San Antonio College.

Cochran’s mark in the discus was 196 feet, 1 inch. Steve Michaelsen qualified third at 178-4 at Marty Taylor qualified eighth at 165-10.

Cochran threw 60-1½ in the shot put. Steve Michelsen qualified third at 56-0 and Taylor qualified fifth at 54-1½.

Jake Barber ran the 3,200 meters in 9 minutes 27.89 seconds for 11th and is the second alternate for the CIF finals.

Titus Hasson is the second alternate for the 100, as he was 11th in 11:07. He was 16th in the 200 at 22.50.

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

CIF Southern Section Division 2 prelims

MOORPARK — Newport Harbor High’s Peri Howser cleared 10 feet in the pole vault Saturday at Moorpark High to qualify for the CIF finals next week at Mt. San Antonio College.

Paige Tennison qualified second in the 3,200 meters, finishing in 10 minutes, 36.96 seconds.

CIF Southern Section Division 4 prelims
CARPINTERIA - Sage Hill School senior Jack Percival won his heat and qualified second in the 800 meters in 1 minute, 58.67 seconds Saturday at Carpinteria High.

Percival, the Academy League 800 champion, will compete in the CIF finals Saturday at Mt. San Antonio College.

The Sage Hill girls’ 4x100 relay team of Elise Sugarman, Jenny Ascher, Maddy Abbott and Maddie Culberson were also league champs (51.98) who competed at the Division 4 prelims. They finished second in their heat at 52.52 and did not qualify for CIF finals.
