Briefs: UCI sweeps honors

UC Irvine sophomore Jessy Cardey was named Big West Conference Player of the Year in women’s water polo, while UCI’s Danielle Warde was Freshman of the Year and Dan Klatt was Coach of the Year.

Cardey, Warde and senior Cortney Collyer were named first-team All-Big West, while senior Caitlin Haskell represented the Anteaters on the second team.

Cardey, who was Freshman of the Year in 2010, has 51 goals, second on the team, entering the NCAA Championships, which begin Friday at the University of Michigan. The repeat first-team all-conference performer helped No. 7-ranked UCI (21-8) go 5-0 in conference play and earn the program’s third straight Big West Tournament crown.

Warde leads the team with 52 goals, which ties the UCI season record for a freshman also held by Gianna Rossi in 2006.

It’s the third straight top honor for Klatt.

Collyer, another repeat first-team honoree, has 41 goals and was named Big West Tournament Most Valuable Player as well as UCI’s Scholar-Athlete of the Year. She also led the team in the regular season with 49 steals and 30 assists.

Haskell, who was also a second-team pick as a junior, has 33 goals.

Senior goalie Lauren Davis received honorable mention.

UCI, the No. 5 seed in the eight-team NCAA Tournament, faces No. 4-seeded USC, the two-time defending NCAA champion ranked No. 4, Friday in a quarterfinal at 4:30 p.m.

Two ‘Eaters lauded

UC Irvine seniors Bryan Harris and Max Griel have been named second-team All-Big West Conference in men’s golf.

Harris led the Anteaters with a 73.58 average in 11 tournaments with three top-10 finishes. He won the Anteater Invitational at Big Canyon Country Club in February, shooting a 5-under-par 67 in the final round and winning the first playoff hole.

Greil had a 73.60 average with three top-10 showings. He was UCI’s top performer at the Big West Championship with a fourth-place finish.

Sophomore Jerry He received honorable mention.

UC Irvine sophomore Jerry He has been selected to compete in the NCAA Men’s Golf San Diego Regional May 19-21 at The Farms Golf Club in Rancho Santa Fe.

He is one of 10 individuals in the field, joining 13 teams that will be competing.

Eighteen holes will be played each of the three days on the par-72 layout that covers 6,947 yards. The top five teams and one top individual not from the top-five teams will advance to the NCAA Championship at Karsten Creek Golf Club in Stillwater, Okla., May 31 thru June 5.

Two ‘Eaters honored

UC Irvine juniors Maggie Newton-Neal Sam Hyams have been named Big West Conference Athlete of the Week in women’s and men’s track, respectively.

Newton-Neal was the top collegiate finisher (fifth overall) in the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 9.50 seconds at the Oxy Invitational Saturday.

Hyams was the top collegiate finisher (third overall) in the 1,500 meters at the same event. His time was 3:45.19.

UCI hosts the Big West Conference Track & Field Championships at Anteater Stadium Friday and Saturday. Field events begin at 10 a.m. with the first track event at 3:30 p.m. each day.

Ex-Pirate shines

Former Orange Coast College baseball standout Ryan Dunn, a junior second baseman at Oregon State, hit for the cycle in the No. 2-ranked Beavers’ 13-3 nonconference home win over Portland on Tuesday.

Dunn, who redshirted last season after helping OCC win the state championship in 2009, doubled in the second inning, homered in the fifth, singled in the sixth and tripled in the eighth to complete only the second cycle in school history.

Through Tuesday, he had played in 39 games and started 32, hitting .284 with three homers, 23 runs batted in and 33 hits.
