Borunda, Knapp qualify

Carlo Borunda, a Newport Beach Country Club pro, and Jason Beach were the top two qualifiers at the U.S. Open qualifier Wednesday at Newport Beach Country Club.

Borunda and Beach both shot three-under-par 68 to lead the six qualifiers who move on to the sectionals, Stage 2 of the U.S. Open qualifying June 6 at Oakmont Country Club in Glendale. The top golfers in the sectional qualifiers (36 holes) make it into the U.S. Open.

Estancia High junior Jake Knapp, along with Paul Imondi and Dan Kupfer, shot 69. Kevin Dehuff was one of four to shoot 70 and beat the others in a three-hole playoff to grab the final qualifying spot.

Dehuff beat out Sean Shahi, Justin Itzen and Patrick Stolpe.
