High School Roundup: CdM boys’ volleyball advances to quarterfinals

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Corona del Mar def. Oaks Christian

CORONA DEL MAR — Parker Brown had 12 kills and Remy Lamons added 11 kills to lead the No. 2-seeded Sea Kings (23-6) past the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 2 playoffs Thursday.

The Pacific Coast League champions won 25-18, 25-15, 25-17 and advanced to Saturday’s quarterfinal. They play at home against Trabuco Hills at 7 p.m.

Jack Reed had seven kills, Thomas Hunter had six kills and Joe Ctvrtlik amassed 33 assists for CdM.

Dana Hills def. Newport Harbor

DANA POINT — The Sailors’ season ended in the second round of the CIF Southern Section Division 1 playoffs after the Dolphins won, 21-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-19, Thursday night.

Kevin Rakestraw had 16 kills, Clay Carr had 15 kills and Chris Sheppard added 11 kills for Newport Harbor (22-9).

Connor Leggett amassed 36 assists and Max Richley recorded 13 digs for the Sailors.

Santa Monica Crossroads def. Sage Hill

SANTA MONICA — Senior outside hitter Chris Zadra recorded 24 kills, four blocks and two service aces for the Lightning in the CIF Southern Section Division 4 second-round playoff match, which Santa Monica Crossroads won, 25-21, 16-25, 20-25, 25-21, 15-13, on Thursday.

The setback in the second round is Sage Hill’s second straight in the playoffs.

“There were a lot of big points at the end that could’ve gone either way,” Sage Hill Coach Dan Thomassen. “The ball didn’t fall for us.”

Thomassen said he has nine players coming back next year, including junior setter Kent Kawaguchi. Kawaguchi helped Sage Hill (19-11) win the program’s third Academy League title.

Kawaguchi registered 49 assists, five kills and four aces.

Creagan Lydon had 14 kills and four blocks.

SOFTBALL

Estancia 11, Costa Mesa 1 (five innings)

COSTA MESA — Estancia Coach Marcus Franco said he was proud of his team’s effort and how it improved during the season.

The Eagles didn’t disappoint their coach Thursday, when they mercied their rivals in an Orange Coast League finale at Estancia.

Franco said his defense played great led by pitcher Kelly Hinkle’s four-hitter.

Estancia (9-18, 4-6 in league) ended its season with 10 hits.

Bryanna Vernon (two for three, RBI), Gianna Guyot (two for three), Leticia Ortega (two for three, two RBIs), Chloe Davis (one hit, three RBIs), Ray Reynolds (one for three, two RBIs) and Maggie Kirakosian (one for three) also contributed to the victory.

BASEBALL

Estancia 18, Costa Mesa 2

COSTA MESA — Senior starter Andres Hernandez pitched five innings, giving up one run, five hits and striking out five as the Eagles swept the Battle for the Bell rivalry series and closed out Orange Coast League play on Thursday.

Next for Estancia (17-8, 12-3 in league) is the CIF Southern Section Division 4 playoffs, which start next week. The Eagles learn of their first-round opponent on Monday, when the playoff pairings are released.

Costa Mesa (4-20, 2-13) did not make the postseason.

Estancia’s Alex Trancoso went four for five with one run batted in, two doubles and four runs scored.

Brodie Pearce was three for four with three RBIs for the Eagles.
