Burnham wins sand volleyball event

Newport Harbor High product Kirby Burnham and her USC teammate, Stevi Robinson, won the American Volleyball Coaches Assn. Collegiate Sand Volleyball Championship pairs event on Sunday in Gulf Shores, Ala.

Burnham and Robinson, the No. 1-seeded team, defeated No.2-seeded Caitlin Ledoux and Tara Roenicke from Long Beach State, 21-19, 21-19, in the final.

Burnham, a 6-foot-2 junior, and the 5-6 Robinson are USC’s first sand volleyball All-Americans and finished their 2013 season with a 25-4 record in dual matches.

Robinson is a graduate student, who transferred to USC from Pepperdine.

USC finished third as a team, falling in the semifinals to eventual champion Long Beach State.
