NAC to compete in junior district regatta

The Newport Aquatic Center junior rowing program competes in the USRowing Southwest Junior District Championship regatta this weekend.

The event is at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center on Lake Natoma. Crews from clubs and high schools in Arizona, California, Colorado, New Mexico, Hawaii, Nevada and Utah will be on the water. The regatta is one of 12 regional qualifying events across the U.S.

More than 100 NAC boys and girls rowers will be competing in 25 different events in the varsity, JV, third varsity, novice and freshman divisions. The events range from heavyweight and lightweight eights, fours, quads, doubles and singles. All events are contested in side by side racing over 2,000 meters.

Varsity rowers in 11 of the events are competing for a place at the USRowing Junior National Championships in Oak Ridge, Tenn. in June.

The Newport Aquatic Center contingent is made up of freshman through senior high school students from Newport Harbor, Corona del Mar, Mater Dei, JSerra, Woodbridge and other high schools in Orange County.

The crews have been training and competing since August and have participated in regattas throughout the state, including the San Diego Crew Classic.
