College roundup: Pirates win state titles

State meet
LOS ANGELES — Kierstin Colesen’s dynamic performance helped Orange Coast capture its second straight California Community College Athletic Assn. State championship Saturday at East Los Angeles College.
Colesen, a sophomore, won three individual state tiles and anchored three state champion relay teams on her way to being named the Women’s Swimmer of the Meet.
OCC dominated the meet, winning the state title for the 16th time in the 34 years of the competition. The Pirates scored 551 points, while Diablo Valley took second with 356.5 and Santa Rosa was third with 285.
Colesen won the 50-yard freestyle in 23.48 seconds, the 100 free in 51.44 and the 200 free in 1:53.42. Lisa MacManus, Melanie Larson, Alyssa Schrader and Colesen won the 200 free relay in 1:36.11.
Brittany Daniels, Mary Jane Conney, Schrader and Colesen won the 800 free relay in 7:49.1, which was 11 seconds faster than the runner-up. Colesen, MacManus, Larson and Schrader won the 400 free relay in 3:32.72, which was six seconds faster than the second-place relay team.

LOS ANGELES — Orange Coast had no individual state title and just two relay wins, but still won the California Community College Athletic Assn. State championship Saturday at East Los Angeles College.
The Pirates claimed their fourth men’s title over the past six seasons. OCC used its depth to finish with 522 points, while Ventura (480) came in second and Santa Rosa (407) took third.
The trio of Jonathan Kim, Joshua Kloppenburg and Ben Burnett earned a pair of state titles by swimming three legs of the 400 medley relay team (along with Kevin Donnally, in 3 minutes, 24.48 seconds) and the 200 medley relay team (along with Derek Pronk, in 1:32.48).

Big West Championship
MISSION VIEJO — UC Irvine finished fifth Tuesday at Mission Viejo Country Club.
UC Davis won the team title with a 54-hole total of 871. Pacific was second at 888, Cal State Northridge third at 895, Cal Poly fourth at 897 and UCI fifth at 902 in the nine-team field.
Austin Graham of UC Davis was medalist at six-under-par 210 over three rounds after shooting a two-under 70 Tuesday. Nick Delio of Cal State Northridge was second (214) and Bryan Pierce from Cal Poly was third (216).
UCI senior Max Greil shot a 77 in the final round and tied for fourth at four-over 220 with Pacific’s Patrick Kucich and UC Davis’ Tyler Raber.
Anteater senior Bryan Harris, with a one-under 71 Tuesday, finished 12th at 224. Sophomore Jerry He (77) was 19th at 230, sophomore Mickey Chan (85) finished 33rd at 236 and sophomore Michael Yang (77) placed 43rd at 243.

Doubleheader
RIVERSIDE — Stacie Salazar pitched a complete-game three-hitter to lead Vanguard University to a 6-1 win over Biola in the play-in game of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament on Tuesday at John C. Funk Stadium.
The Lions advanced to face No. 1-ranked Cal Baptist in a best-of-three series, and were no-hit in a 9-1 loss in the series opener Tuesday night.
Two Cal Baptist pitchers combined on the five-inning no-no.
Salazar struck out two and walked one against Biola to improve to 7-6.
Angela St. Croix was two for three with a run batted in and Kari Bergerson was two for four with an RBI to pace the Lions’ seven-hit attack. Kaysie Flasck drove in two for Vanguard (26-31).
