High School Roundup: Top-seeded CdM boys’ lacrosse opens playoffs with win

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 16, Dana Hills 5

CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Casey Mix had four goals and three assists to lead the top-seeded Sea Kings in the first round of the U.S. Lacrosse Southern Section South Division playoffs.

Senior Todd Kitzens had two goals and three assists and senior Chris Von Der Ahe had one goal, four assists and four groundballs for CdM (16-2), which plays host to Beckman on Thursday.

Sophomores Max Kline (three goals), Ben Paltiz (one goal, one assist), Sherwin Gersten (one assist), Chad Redfearn (one goal, four groundballs), Brett Greenlee (one goal) and Hoyt Crance (eight saves), as well as seniors Chase McElroy (one goal, four groundballs) and Brett Nelson (one goal, four groundballs) also contributed for the Sea Kings.

Corona del Mar def. Irvine

CORONA DEL MAR — Joey Martino had 15 kills for CdM as it closed out Pacific Coast League play with a 22-25, 25-10, 25-16, 25-21 win Tuesday night at home.

Ryan Moss, Ryan Clayton and Tommy Brooks each added 11 kills for the Sea Kings (18-9, 10-0 in league). Erik Ctvrtlik had 12 digs and Matt Ctvrtlik added 49 assists.

CdM, ranked No. 9 in CIF Southern Section Division 1, plays host to Newport Harbor in the Battle of the Bay on Friday at 6:30 p.m.

NEWPORT BEACH — Stanford-bound senior Kevin Rakestraw had 17 kills to help lead the Sailors to a 25-20, 29-27, 25-8, 25-22 Sunset League victory on senior night Tuesday.

Peirce Ward had 14 kills and seven aces and Steven Duhoux added 40 assists for Newport Harbor (19-8, 8-2 in league), which clinched second place in league.

The Sailors play at Corona del Mar in the Battle of the Bay Friday at 6:30 p.m.

BASEBALL

Estancia 12, Saddleback 1

SANTA ANA — Ben Beck stole five bases and went four for five with one run batted in and one run scored for the Eagles in the Orange Coast League game Tuesday.

Steven Macias improved to 5-1 after striking out six and allowing one earned run in five innings.

Jackson Letterman went two for three with two runs, an RBI and a double, while

Steven Macias (two for four, two RBIs), Eric Molina (two for two, two RBIS, one run) and Levi Stillman (two for two, two runs, one RBI) also contributed for Estancia (15-7, 8-4).

The Eagles play host to Saddleback on Friday.

CORONA DEL MAR — Max Stone went two for three with a home run and two runs batted in for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League game Tuesday.

Tyler Maloney was two for four with an RBI and Brenden Heuston was two for four for CdM (7-16, 2-10 in league), which plays at Irvine on Friday.

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — The Lightning had three hits in the Academy League game Tuesday.

Sage Hill (10-6, 7-5 in league) plays host to St. Margaret’s on Friday.

BOYS’ GOLF

Pacific Coast League finals

SAN JUAN CAPISTRANO — Corona del Mar High’s Walter Frome and Chase Wheatley moved on to the finals after making the cut of 18 during the first day at San Juan Hills Country Club Tuesday.

Frome is tied for the lead after shooting three-under-par 68 in the first round. Wheatley moved on to Wednesday after his 73.

Sunset League finals

LONG BEACH — Newport Harbor High’s Landon Knight is tied for sixth and qualified for the final day after he shot two-over-par 74 at Recreation Park Golf Course Tuesday.

The Sailors’ Thomas Terry (78), Max Meisenheimer (79), Mason Moody (80), Kyle Morris (91) and Anthony Parise (94) missed the cut.

Newport Harbor (13-4, 7-3 in league) edged Huntington Beach, 195-198, Monday at SeaCliff Country Club to finish second in league.

Brad Tapfer (38), Knight (38), Terry (39), Moody (40) and Meisenheimer (40) scored for the Sailors.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Corona del Mar 16, Beckman 2

CORONA DEL MAR — Alec Adamson swept in singles for the Sea Kings in their Pacific Coast League finale Monday at home.

Seniors Calder Maloney and Garrett Rucker won twice in doubles on senior day, as did the senior pairing of Preston Kim and Andrew Nemnich. Seniors Andrew Nguyen and Paul Kacik also won twice for CdM (17-2, 8-2 in league), which finished second in league behind University.

CdM is at the two-day league individual tournament beginning Wednesday at Beckman.

Los Alamitos 10, Newport Harbor 8

NEWPORT BEACH — The Sailors dropped the Sunset League match, but finished third to earn a CIF Southern Section playoff berth Monday.

Los Al finished first and Fountain Valley was second.

The Sunset League individual finals begin Wednesday at Seal Beach Tennis Center. Reese Stalder (25-2) is the No. 2 seed in singles. Sean Perrier and Garrett Byers are the No. 5-seeded team. They are 22-11.
