UCLA 8, UC Irvine 1

LOS ANGELES — Connor Spencer went two for four with one run batted in and Chris Rabago was two for four for the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference game Tuesday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

UCLA (28-13) broke open a 3-0 game with five runs in the seventh and UCI (28-13) averted the shutout in the eighth.

Evan Brock took the loss for UCI, allowing one run in two-thirds of an inning. He walked three and hit a batter.

Cody Poteet earned the win, allowing just two hits in six shutout innings.

UC Irvine 4, UC Davis 3

IRVINE — Connor Spencer doubled in two runs with two outs and two strikes in the ninth inning to lift the host Anteaters in the finale of a three-game Big West Conference series on Sunday.

Ronnie Shaeffer went three for four for the Anteaters, who improved to 10-5 in conference by completing the sweep.

Race Parmenter earned the win with a scoreless inning of relief, while starter Andrew Morales allowed three runs on seven hits in seven innings.

Davis fell to 15-26, 3-12.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Long Beach State 4, UC Irvine 1

INDIAN WELLS — The top-seeded Anteaters were upset in the championship match on Sunday at Indian Wells Tennis Garden as the 49ers snapped their 20-match winning streak.

Senior Kristina Smith posted a 7-6, 6-2 victory at No. 1 singles to earn UCI’s only point. The Anteaters (22-4) did earn an at-large berth into the 64-team NCAA Tournament. UCI will attempt to earn its first NCAA Tournament win in a first-round matchup with San Jose State. Scheduling details are forthcoming.

Long Beach State improved to 21-3.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

Hawaii 5, UC Irvine 4 (OT)

IRVINE — The Anteaters’ run of consecutive Big West Conference championships ended at four as the visiting Rainbow Wahine prevailed in the title game of the Big West tournament at UCI.

Jillian Yocum had 13 saves for UCI (21-9), which sees its season end.

Hillary Estrada, Michaela Pierandozzi, Hannah Croghan and Emily Carlson all had single goals for UCI.

Hawaii improved to 21-9.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Steve Scott Invitational

IRVINE — Sophomore Itos Aikhionbare won the discus throw (163 feet, four inches) and the shotput (49-0 1/4) to pace host UCI athletes on Sunday.

UCI’s Kaycee Holcomb was fourth in the 800 meters in 2 minutes, 14.35 seconds and Paige Bushnell was fifth in the 100 hurdles (14.12).

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Steve Scott Invitational

IRVINE — Senior Nick Jennings won the pole vault and Riley Martin was second in the 1,500 meters at the 19th annual event completed Sunday.

Jennings cleared 16 feet, 6 3/4 inches, while Martin’s time was 3 minutes, 46.53 seconds.

UCI’s Stephen Brown was third in the pole vault (15-7).

Mason Miller (57-0 in the shotput), Alex Campbell (6-4 3/4 in the high jump), Sam Hyams (800 in 1:51.48) and Matt Tyson (400 in 48.87) also had third-place finishes for UCI.

Miller was fifth in the discus (163-8) and Kyle Hubbard was fifth in the 110 high hurdles (14.96).

MEN’S GOLF

Big West Conference Championship

SAN JACINTO — Junior Travis Russell finished 17th to lead UC Irvine, which finished seventh in the event concluded Tuesday at Country Club at Soboba Springs.

Russell, a Newport Harbor High product, posted a 54-hole total of 225. Sophomore Pete Fernandez (20th at 226), junior Allan Jun and Michael Yang (tied for 32nd at 231) and freshman Jacob Schulze (42nd at 237) also had top-50 finishes for UCI.
