College Roundup: Anteaters upset Aggies

UC Irvine 4, UC Davis 0

INDIAN WELLS — The No. 6-seeded Anteaters upset the third-seeded Aggies in a Big West Conference tournament quarterfinal match Friday.

UCI (11-12) willl face No. 7 Cal State Northridge Saturay at 3 p.m. at the Indian Wells Tennis Garden. Earlier in the season, UCI defeated the Matadors, 5-2.

Against UC Davis, Courtney Byron (No. 1), Kristina Smith (No. 3) and Brooke Schweyer (No. 5) won in straight sets in singles to clinch the team win, as the Anteaters won twice in doubles to earn the doubles point.

Ellie Edles, an Estancia High product and the daughter of UCI Coach Mike Edles, won in doubles, as she teamed with Nicole Koehly for an 8-4 victory at No. 2 doubles.

BASEBALL

Cal State Bakersfield 5, UC Irvine 4

BAKERSFIELD — Andrew Letourneau drove a 2-1 pitch to left field off Anteaters reliever Nick Hoover to score Tyler Shyrock for the Roadrunners’ game-winning run in the 10th inning of the nonconference game Friday.

UCI (26-12) gave up four runs in the ninth and suffered its econd straight loss.

Drew Hillman went three for five with one run batted in, Tommy Reyes was two for threee with an RBI and Jordan Fox was two for four for the Anteaters.

Matt Summer pitched eight innings. He struck out four and walked one. He gave up two runs and three hits.

UCI had 10 hits and Bakersfield (25-13) finished with nine.
