Schmidt of CMMS highlights skateboarding league finals

Michael Schmidt of Costa Mesa Middle School outclassed his peers to earn first place in the street competition in the finals of the National Scholastic Skateboarding League at Vans Skatepark in Orange Wednesday night.

Schmidt racked up 25.2 points from the judges to edge second-place Kouhei Kito (24.4 points) of Dwyer.

The NSSL finale featured high school and middle school teams from Orange County, including Costa Mesa, Estancia, Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor, as well as squads from San Diego.

Young pro Tom Schaar of Earl Warren Middle School (Solana Beach) was one of many highlights at the NSSL finals. He won the bowl competition.

Katrina Foley, the league president and founder, called the NSSL’s fourth season a success and sees even more growth in the future.

Paige LaBare of Costa Mesa High finished ninth in the bowl competition that was won by Justin Rivera of Torrey Pines High.

Riley Greer and Ariana Carmona helped Irvine High take the top spot out of 11 Orange County high school teams with 134 points, ahead of Trabuco Hills (115) and San Clemente (103).

Greer took third in the street competition that Cam Sedlick of Canyon Crest won. Carmona grabbed fourth place in the bowl competition that Justin Rivera of Torrey Pines won.

Estancia was seventh.

Newport Harbor finished tied for ninth with Costa Mesa, and CdM was 11th.

Huntington Beach was fourth and Edison was eighth.

Gage Boan of Edison High took third in the bowl division.

Bernice Ayer Middle School took the top spot of the nine NSSL middle school teams with 157 points ahead of South Lake (Irvine) and Shorecliffs (San Clemente).

CdM Middle School was fourth, Dwyer sixth, Costa Mesa sixth, Sowers seventh and Ensign ninth.
