High School Roundup: CdM seniors end league on high note

Corona del Mar 189, Beckman 205

NEWPORT BEACH — Seniors Mike Moorhead, Brian Mull and John Davenport finished their CdM high school careers undefeated in the Pacific Coast League at 40-0 Wednesday.

Moorhead shot two-over-par 37 to share medalist honors with Beckman’s Brett Robinson at Newport Beach Country Club.

Davenport, Mull, Chase Wheatley and Hale Furey each shot 38 for the Sea Kings (21-0, 10-0 in league).

CdM will play against Dana Hills Thursday at NBCC.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Beckman 14, Corona del Mar 8

IRVINE — The Sea Kings finished as co-champions of the Pacific Coast League Wednesday.

Last year, CdM (14-3, 9-1 in league) finished second in league.

Kylie Mulvaney, Shannon Griffin and Meredith Dazin stood out defensively for the Sea Kings. Midfielder Gabby Smith scored three goals, caused three turnovers and recorded one takeaway.

Beckman finished 9-1 in league.

CdM will learn of postseason pairings on Sunday.

Newport Harbor 193, Foothill 197

TUSTIN — Sophomore Mason Moody earned medalist honors with a three-under-par 33 showing in the Sailors’ nonleague match at Tustin Ranch Golf Club on Wednesday.

Carter Norris and Tyler Tashiro each carded 39s for Newport Harbor (12-8).

Brad Tapfer and Danny Willett both had 41s.

The Sailors play host to Huntington Beach at Big Canyon Country Club on Thursday at 3 p.m.

Corona del Mar 118, Beckman 52

CORONA DEL MAR — CdM won 10 of 11 events in the Pacific Coast League meet Wednesday at CdM.

Jared Namba won the 200-yard individual medley in 1:55.84, and Blake Motal captured the 50 free in 21.86 seconds. Christian Garkani won the 100 fly (52.93), Ari Marks won the 100 free (48.38) and Paul Sigler finished first in the 500 free (4:50.73).

Liam Karas won the 100 back in 54.03 and Tyler Lin won the 100 breast in 1:00.67 for CdM, which won all three relays.

Corona del Mar (4-1 in league) hosts the Pacific Coast League preliminaries on Wednesday.

Laguna Beach 115, Costa Mesa 52

LAGUNA BEACH — Senior James Lewis won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 56.93 seconds for the Mustangs in the Orange Coast League meet Wednesday.

Costa Mesa will next compete in the league preliminaries Tuesday in the Mustangs’ pool.

Corona del Mar 103, Beckman 66

CORONA DEL MAR — Brynne Wong won the 50-yard freestyle and 100 butterfly for the Sea Kings in Wednesday’s Pacific Coast League meet.

Wong won the 50 in 24.95 seconds, and she touched in the 100 fly in 57.08. Hollace Barden captured the 100 free in 53.79, and Ally McCormick won the 200 free in 1:59.30.

Marina Coskinas won the 500 free in 5:38.44 for CdM, which also won the 200 and 400 free relays.

CdM (4-1 in league) plays host to the league preliminaries on Tuesday.

BOY’S TRACK & FIELD

Corona del Mar 95, Beckman 26

CORONA DEL MAR — Thomas Testini, Nick McGuinness and Darian Vaden were each double winners for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet Wednesday.

Testin won the 100 meters in 11.2 seconds and the 200 in 22.6. McGuinness won the 110 hurdles in 15.3 and the high jump (6-0). Vaden won the long jump (17-6 ¾) and the triple jump (37-1 ¼).

Others winners for CdM included: Troy Hardy (400 in 51.5), Kyle Iverson (800 in 1:59.5), Blake Myers (1,600 in 4:42.5), Spencer Keith (3,200 in 10:08.0) and Alex Imani (discus, 148-11).

The 4x400 relay was not run because of rain.

GIRLS’ TRACK & FIELD

Corona del Mar 98, Beckman 23

CORONA DEL MAR — Katie Groke, Emily Glenn and Karleh Wilson were each double winners for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League meet Wednesday.

Groke won the 200 meters in 27 seconds and the 4000 in 1:01.1. Glenn won the 100 hurdles in 17.1 and the 300 hurdles in 50.4. Wilson won the shot put (40 feet, 9 inches) and discus (128-3).

Cassidy Lundy (100 in 13.1), Kristen Rivera (800 in 1:27.9), Ashlee Powers (1,600 in 5:20.1), Shelby Perez (3,200 in 13:04.2), Claire Keddington (long jump, 15-2) and Victoria Rihm (high jump, 4-10) also won for CdM.
