College Roundup: UCI women’s golf team takes second in Big West

Big West Conference Championships

SAN LUIS OBISPO — UC Irvine finished second and Anteaters redshirt freshman Michelle Yang finished third in the three-day event completed Tuesday at the San Luis Obispo Country Club.

Yang shot one-under-par 71 in the final round to make her 54-hole total 224, four shots back of champion Bev Vatananugulkit of UC Davis.

Sophomore Ronnie Valerio tied for eighth (229) while junior Michelle Park tied for 13th at 231.

Senior Lalita Patipaksiri tied for 16th at 233 and sophomore Sara Banke tied for 29th at 238.

UCI’s team score of 911 was 13 shots behind victorious UC Davis.

BASEBALL

UCLA 9, UC Irvine 3

LOS ANGELES — The Anteaters suffered their third straight loss and dropped to 3-9 on the road after losing the nonconference game to the No. 12-ranked Bruins Tuesday at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

UCI took a 2-0 lead in the first on a two-run single down the left-field line by Connor Spencer but watched UCLA tie the game in the bottom of the second as Beau Amaral’s two-out hit to right got past Scott Gottschling for a triple that scored the tying runs.

The Anteaters (20-17) rallied and took the lead again in the fourth on Dillon Moyer’s deep fly-ball to left that scored Gottschling from third but UCI committed two errors in the bottom of the sixth that led to four Bruin runs and fell behind for good at 6-3. UCLA (27-10) tacked on three runs in the seventh to cap the scoring.

MEN’S GOLF

Anteater Invitational

NEWPORT BEACH — UC Irvine redshirt freshman Pete Fernandez finished fourth and the Anteaters finished fifth as a team in the three-day event, concluded Tuesday at Shady Canyon Golf Club.

Fernandez shot two-under-par 69 in Tuesday’s final round which made his 54-hole total 214.

UCI’s team score of 884 was 22 shots off the pace of champion Long Beach State.

UCI sophomore Allan Jun, with a 73 Tuesday, placed 14th at 220. Junior Michael Yang shot 76 and finished 17th at 221, junior Mickey Chan (81) was 32nd at 229 and redshirt sophomore Ryan Knapp (82) was 41st at 235.

Competing as individuals, UCI representatives Zack Duan (73) finished 28th at 227, Bhuvan Potluri (74) was 32nd at 229 and Jae Kang (84) was 46th at 239.

Kevin Lim from Long Beach State was medalist at one-under 212.

The ‘Eaters compete in the Big West Conference Championship Sunday through Tuesday on the Mountain Course at La Quinta Resort.

SOFTBALL

Santa Ana 5, Orange Coast 3

COSTA MESA — Kate O’Banion hit a two-run home run and Cheyanne Tovar had three hits, two runs batted in and scored one run for the Pirates in their Orange Empire and regular-season finale Tuesday.

Two OCC errors led to four unearned runs as pitcher Kaitlyn Hooper allowed one earned run on five hits in a complete-game effort.

For the Pirates, Kayla Blanco had two hits, while Nicolette Lujan notched an RBI single in the third and Whitney Day added a hit and scored a run.

OCC finished 8-22, 2-12.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Ventura 5, Orange Coast 2

VENTURA — Nicole Pham and Remi Sutton won in singles for the Pirates, who lost in the Southern California Regionals semifinal Tuesday.

Pham won, 6-1, 6-4, and Sutton won, 6-7, 6-3, 6-4.
