High School Roundup: Sea Kings clinch at least share of PCL title

IRVINE — Junior outside hitter Joey Martino recorded 10 kills on Tuesday, helping the Corona del Mar High boys’ volleyball team sweep Woodbridge, 25-17, 25-10, 25-20, and clinch at least a share of the Pacific Coast League title.

The Sea Kings (16-9, 8-0 in league) have won 11 straight league championships and 14 of their last 15.

Augie Miller had seven kills and one block for CdM.

Kevin Fults finished with five kills and two blocks.

The Sea Kings play host to Beckman Friday at 5:15 p.m.

Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT — Newport Harbor senior Marty Taylor won the shotput with a mark of 59 feet 10 inches and placed second in the discus throw at 183-2 during the Mt. Sac Relays High School Invitational on Saturday.

Taylor finished five feet behind the discus champion, Santee West Hills Brendon Song, who’s 188-2 throw ranks No. 1 in the state.

Taylor has the state’s top throw in the shotput at 61-2 1/2.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Estancia 16, Saddleback 2

SANTA ANA — The Eagles wrapped up regular-season play and most likely earned a share of the Orange Coast League championship Tuesday.

Kimon Brouft and Kyle Hastings swept at No. 3 doubles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-1, for Estancia (15-5, 7-1 in league).

Joseph Kidane swept at No. 3 singles, 6-0, 6-3, 6-1, and Charlie Griffen swept at No. 1 singles, 6-4, 6-1, 6-0 for the Eagles. If Laguna Beach wins out this week, the Breakers will share the OCL title with Estancia.

The OCL finals begin with preliminaries May 1 at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Corona del Mar 16, Woodbridge 2

IRVINE — Sea Kings Alec Adamson, Chaz Downing and Bjorn Hoffman swept in singles in the Pacific Coast League match Tuesday.

CdM (16-2, 7-2 in league) plays host to Beckman on Monday.

Marina 9, Newport Harbor 9 (Marina wins on games, 80-79)

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Sophomore Reese Stalder swept at No. 1 singles for the Sailors in Sunset League action on Tuesday.

With one league match left, Newport Harbor and Marina share third place in league at 5-4. The Sailors close out league on Monday at home against Los Alamitos at 3 p.m. and the Vikings face Fountain Valley.

Michael Eder and David Schaefer swept at No. 3 doubles for Newport Harbor (12-8 overall).

The Sailors won at Huntington Beach, 13-5, on Monday. Stalder swept at No. 1 singles and Lee swept at No. 2 singles, while the No. 1 doubles team of Sean Perrier ad Garrett Byers also swept.

NEWPORT BEACH — Kevin Rakestraw had 10 kills for the Sailors, but the Oilers won the Sunset League match, 25-19, 25-20, 25-22, Tuesday

Clay Carr and Peirce Ward both had six kills and Steven Duhoux had 20 assists for Newport Harbor (18-8, 6-2 in league).

COSTA MESA — Joey Mittner had eight kills for the Eagles, but the Grizzlies won the Orange Coast League match, 25-17, 25-20, 25-23, Tuesday.

Estancia plays at Saddleback on Thursday.

BASEBALL

Estancia 2, Godinez 1

COSTA MESA — Senior Ben Beck threw a complete game, giving up one earned run, four hits and striking out seven in the Eagles’ Orange Coast League home game on Tuesday.

The third-place Eagles (13-7, 6-4 in league) went up two games on Godinez in the league standings.

Tyler Rios drove in the go-ahead run in the bottom of the sixth with a double.

Steven Macias went two for two for Estancia.

The Eagles are at Godinez Friday at 3:15 p.m.

IRVINE — Baron Schwarz was two for three with a run batted in for the Sea Kings, who scored in the first and seventh innings in the Pacific Coast League game Tuesday.

Northwood scored one run in each of the third, sixth and seventh innings.

CdM (6-14, 2-8 in league) plays host to Northwood Friday at 3:15 p.m.

Costa Mesa 5, Saddleback 4

SANTA ANA — Freshman Mason Tufuga earned the victory after throwing 6 2/3 innings during the Mustangs’ Orange Coast League road game on Tuesday.

Tufuga also drove in two runs in the seventh to break a 3-3 tie.

Connor Howard recorded the save for Costa Mesa (5-14, 2-6 in league).

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 18, Marina 3

CORONA DEL MAR — Senior attacker Casey Mix produced five goals and one assist on Tuesday for the Sea Kings, ranked No. 4 in the state by LaxPower.com.

Chris Von Der Ahe had three goals and two assists for CdM (14-2), while Ben Palitz finished with three goals and an assist.

Jack Harris had four groundballs.

The Sea Kings close out the regular season at home Friday against Mater Dei at 3:30 p.m.

BOYS’ GOLF

Estancia tournament

COSTA MESA — Newport Harbor High’s Brad Tapfer was the top individual player in the tournament that featured four-man teams and specialized scoring Monday at Mesa Verde Country Club.

The scoring system for the tournament scored one point for par, three points for a birdie, five for a eagle and 10 for an ace. Marina won the tournament with 79 points, edging Woodbridge with 78. Newport Harbor was third with 74.

Tapfer collected one eagle and five birdies, and racked up 27 points for the Sailors.

Thomas Terry scored 17 points, Max Meisenheimer had 16 and Mason Moody earned 14 points for Newport Harbor.

NEWPORT BEACH — Chase Wheatley shot three-under-par 32 for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match at Newport Beach Country Club Tuesday.

Walter Frome (37), Brian Hong (38), John Hong (39) and Drew Hanson (40) also scored for CdM (5-4 in league).

Karick Brown shot three-under 33 to earn medalist honors in the Sea Kings’ 182-212 win against Irvine at Oak Creek Golf Course Monday.

John Hong (36), Hanson 37, Wheatley (38) and Frome (38) also scored for CdM.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Savanna 80, Estancia 60

ANAHEIM — Freshman Chris De Frenza was a double winner in the 200-yard individual medley (2:40 .69) and the 100 backstroke (1:12.60) for the Eagles in the nonleague meet Tuesday.

Shawn Lepard won the 100 breaststroke (1:25.27), John Leal won the 100 freestyle (1:02.1) and Mario Mendez had a personal and team best in the 100 free at 1:00.60.

Estancia (0-10) plays host to Costa Mesa Wednesday at 3 p.m.
