Time to support Lord
Liz Lord was a three-year varsity volleyball player for Coach Dan Glenn’s Newport Harbor High girls’ team from 1999 through 2001.
Her teammates included April Ross, Heather Cullen, Brenda Waterman and Alyson Jennings, as well as Katie King and Taylor Govaars. Lord was a member of the 1999 state championship team and an All-Sea View League performer on the 2001 CIF section finalist team as an extremely competitive middle blocker who was exceptional attacking off of one foot. She accepted a full volleyball scholarship to the University of Portland where she competed for four years and graduated with a degree in organizational communication. After graduation, Liz stayed in Portland where she was employed by a marketing firm.
Earlier this year, Liz started getting sick on a daily basis. After numerous trips to the doctor, the diagnosis was still a mystery. In mid-March, on her way home from yet another diagnosis, she went into a coma and spent a week in intensive care at the Oregon Health and Science University. While in ICU, they found a glioblastoma brain tumor which is inoperable and incurable. She is starting treatment in hopes of controlling the tumor growth through radiation and chemotherapy.
With this news, Katie King and Taylor Govaars (an assistant volleyball coach at Newport Harbor) have rallied to create a fundraiser to help offset the enormous costs involved with Liz’s medical care.
Former Newport basketball player, Tony Melum, has offered his services in this effort. His company, “Don’t Worry, Be Happy” T- shirts, will be selling his shirts with the funds going directly to Liz’s medical costs. Katie and Taylor have also created opportunity drawings with sponsorship from Tony Hawk skateboards, Quiksilver, Tavik swimwear, Sabre, Beach Bunny Swimwear, Ruby’s Sandwiches, even Dr. Michael Jones (teeth whitening) and many more.
The boys’ volleyball Battle of the Bay between Newport Harbor and Corona del Mar is Friday at CdM. This is a perfect time to support Liz and join together for her cause. CdM coach Steve Conti actually was Liz’s science teacher at Ensign Intermediate so her need is close to his heart also.
T-shirts will be on sale at the match. They will also be on sale at Newport all week. There will be more fundraising at the Battle of the Bay match. Again, all proceeds will go directly to offset Liz Lord’s medical costs.
