Briefs: CdM’s Reinhardt set for San Diego State

Corona del Mar High senior defensive end Tim Reinhardt has accepted a preferred walk-on spot with the San Diego State football program, said Bill, his father, in an email on Wednesday.

“We believe this is the best fit for Tim,” said Bill, adding that his son received preferred walk-on offers from Oregon, Utah, Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and the University of San Diego.

Reinhardt, a 6-foot-3, 225-pounder, earned All-CIF Southern Section Southern Division accolades for the second straight season. He finished with nine sacks, 47 tackles, one safety and one forced fumble.

Reinhardt helped the Sea Kings (12-2) shut out their first three playoff opponents en route to defending their CIF Southern Section Southern Division championship in December. He led the Sea Kings to a 5-0 record in Pacific Coast League play, recording their first undefeated league title in the program’s history.

Reinhardt received Daily Pilot Newport-Mesa Dream Team, second-team All-Orange County and first-team All-Pacific Coast League honors. He also made the 54th Brea Lions Club Orange County North-South Prep All-Star Football Game at Orange Coast College on June 28.

Mesa’s Williams La Verne bound

Costa Mesa High senior defensive back Kurt Williams has committed to play football at the University of La Verne, a Division III program, said Coach Wally Grant.

Williams finished with 67 tackles last season for the Mustangs.

Williams was nominated to play in the 54th Brea Lions Club Orange County North-South Prep All-Star Football Game at Orange Coast College on June 28.

‘Eaters’ duo lauded

UC Irvine sophomore post Will Davis and freshman guard Alex Young have received All-America recognition from CollegeInsider.com.

Davis was named a Mid-Major Defensive All-American after recording a school-record 88 blocked shots. He broke his own record of 55 in his freshman season. He tied his own single-game record with eight rejections in the March 2 win over Long Beach State.

Davis was the 2012-13 Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Year and he also earned All-Big West Tournament recognition.

Young was named to the Mid-Major Freshmen All-American team after averaging 9.2 points, 3.9 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game.

Young, who was Big West Co-Freshman of the Year this season, recorded 144 assists to set a UCI freshman single-season record. His assist/turnover ratio of 2.62 ranked 16th in the nation. He also was named to the All-Big West Tournament team.

Coach Russell Turner’s ‘Eaters finished the season 21-16, 11-7 in the Big West. UCI advanced to the championship game of the Big West Tournament and reached the second round of the CollegeInsider.Com Tournament.
