College Roundup: Jock breaks school record in 800

WALNUT — UC Irvine junior Charles Jock won the Invitational Elite 800-meter race Saturday afternoon at Mt. San Antonio College.

Jock broke his school record from last season with a time of 1 minute, 45.19 seconds, which is the top mark in the United States and fourth in the world this year. Fred Samoei of Alabama was second in 1:45.52 and Tetlo Emmen, running unattached, finished third in 1:46.63.

Jock broke Steve Scott’s 32-year-old school record in the 800 in March 2010 and posted a top time last year of 1:45.65.

Jock earned All-America honors last year and was a gold-medalist in the 800 meters for the U.S. at last July’s North American, Central American and Caribbean U-23 Championships. He was also named the 2010 Big West Conference Athlete of the Year in men’s track.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UC San Diego

La Jolla — Middle blocker Kevin Wynne had a season-high seven kills and six blocks to lead the No. 3-ranked Anteaters to a 25-19, 25-15, 25-21 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation win Satuday.

UCI (18-11, 14-8 in the MPSF) extends its winning streak to six.

Opposite Carson Clark hit .588 with 11 kills while adding five digs and three block assists. Outside hitter Jordan DuFault added eight kills and four blocks and outside hitter Cory Yoder added seven kills. Middle blocker Scott Kevorken had five block assists to go with three kills and setter Anthony Spittle totaled 29 set assists and four block assists.. Libero Will Thomas recorded five digs.

Phill Bannan, a Corona del Mar High product, had 36 set assists and six digs for No. 11 UC San Diego (9-20, 5-17).

UCI, the fourth seed in the MPSF Tournament, will play host to fifth-seeded Hawaii Saturday at 7 p.m. in Crawford Court. Tickets go on sale Monday at 10 a.m. at the Bren Center.

BASEBALL

Pacific 6, UC Irvine 4

STOCKTON — The Tigers scored two runs in the seventh, while the Anteaters went scoreless during the last three innings of the Big West Conference game Saturday.

D.J. Crumlich went two for five with one run batted in and one run scored, while Brian Hernandez went two for four with one RBI and Drew Hillman was two for four with one run scored for UCI (22-9, 5-3 in conference).

The Anteaters matched Pacific with 10 hits.

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Tyson Leighton went two for three with one run batted in and one run scored to help Vanguard spilt a Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader with Cal Baptist Saturday.

Jacob Domingos went two for two with a run scored for the Lions in the 4-2 win in the nightcap. Robert Pupura pitched all seven innings, striking out seven and allowing seven hits.

Jeremiah Meija went three for four with a run scored in Vanguard’s 7-3 loss.

The Lions are 18-24, 14-18 in conference.

Cal Baptist is 36-11, 23-9.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 7, UC Davis 0

IRVINE — No. 1 singles player Chris Kearney led a sweep in singles for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference match Saturday.

Fabian Matthews (No. 2), Ryan Cheung (No. 3), Shan Sondhu (No. 4), Ryan Mayer (No. 5) and Stephen Stege (No. 6) also won in singles for UCI (15-6, 3-0 in conference).

UC Davis is 4-10, 0-3.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 9, Cal State Northridge 8

IRVINE — Danielle Warde and and Jessy Cardey scored four goal each for the No. 10-ranked Anteaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Lauren Davis had eight saves for UCI (17-8, 3-0 in conference).

The No. 14 Matadors are 21-12, 3-1.

Cal Poly 6, UC Irvine 1

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Courtney Byron and Kristina Smith grabbed the lone win at No. 2 doubles for the Anteaters in the Big West Conference match Saturday.

UCI is 10-11, 3-4 in conference.

Cal Poly is 15-5, 7-1.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — No. 19-ranke Azusa Pacific beat Vanguard, 2-0, and 3-1, in the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday.

The Lions (21-25, 2-14 in conference) had two hits in the first game, and four hits in the nightcap. Patricia Olvera struck out three and walked one in her seven innings in the first game for Vanguard.

APU is 25-17, 10-6.

MEN’S GOLF

Western Intercollegiate

SANTA CRUZ — The UC Irvine men’s golf team is in ninth place after play Saturday at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz.

The second round was suspended due to darkness with UCLA leading at two-under par in the 15-team field. The Bruins shot 347 in the opening round Saturday. Augusta State is in second at eight-over while Oregon and Arizona State are tied for third at 18-over. UCI is currently at 28-over.

Andrew Yun of Stanford is the individual leader at three-under par late in the second round.

UCI freshman Allan Jun is in 20th place at three-over, including a 72 in the first round on the par-70 course. Senior Max Greil (71) is 28th at five-over for the tournament, senior Bryan Harris (74) is in 34th place at six-over, and sophomore Mickey Chan shot a 79 in the first round but is one-under in the second round and 52nd at eight-over for the tourney.

Sophomore Michael Yang (74) is also in 52nd place at eight-over and sophomore Jerry He (79) is in 64th at 11-over.

The conclusion of the second round and the third round are scheduled to complete the tournament Sunday.
