College Roundup: OCC’s Walinowicz advances

Orange Empire Conference Championships

CYPRESS — Orange Coast College sophomore Anna Walinowicz advanced to the quarterfinals in singles after two wins Thursday at Cypress College.

Walinowicz also qualified for Southern California Regional tournament in singles. She beat Saddleback’s Katy O’Neil, 6-2, 6-3, in the first round. Walinowicz also beat Trish Tran of Cypress, 6-1, 6-1.

OCC freshman Lianne Wheelock defeated Irvine Valley’s Megan Miller, 6-3, 6-1, in the first round, but lost to Karly Pletcher of Saddleback in the second round.

OCC freshman Casey Kawabe also won in the first round, 3-6, 6-3, 6-1, over Fullerton’s Jessie Wakeman, and lost to Saddleback’s Ariel Tomaiko, 6-2, 6-1.

Friday’s quarterfinals begin at 9 a.m.

BASEBALL

Irvine Valley 10, Orange Coast 8

COSTA MESA — Chris Carlson (two runs) and Colton Hammill both went two for five with two runs batted in for the Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference game Thursday.

Trent Woodward was three for five with one run and one RBI, as part of OCC’s 14-hit attack.

Matt Moynihan (two runs) and Jordan Beck (one run and one RBI) both went two for four for the Pirates (26-7, 12-6 in conference).

IVC, which had 12 hits, is 17-14, 8-10. The Lasers trailed, 5-1, after three innings, and, 6-4, after six innings. They scored three in the seventh and three in the ninth to gain control.

OCC plays at Irvine Valley Friday at 2 p.m.

Cal Baptist 7, Vanguard 0

RIVERSIDE — The Lions were out-hit, 14-4, in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Thursday.

Ethan Harper went one for one for Vanguard (17-22, 13-17 in conference), which committed three errors.

Cal Baptist is 35-10, 22-8.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Mt. SAC Relays

WALNUT — UC Irvine junior Brennen Halliday placed fourth in his section of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at Mt. San Antonio College Thursday.

Halliday posted a time of 9 minutes, 13.13 seconds and teammate Brett Matejka finished 18th in 9:33.72. UCI’s Andy Burich was 16th in his section with a time of 9:30.20.

WALNUT — UC Irvine junior Katherine Nielsen finished 13th in her section of the 3,000-meter steeplechase at Mt. San Antonio College Thursday.

Nielsen had a time of 11 minutes, 21.59 seconds.
