Share

The 12th annual Jones Cup will take place June 28 at Big Canyon Country Club. At least one of the four private clubs has its team set.

Santa Ana Country Club will be represented by head professional Geoff Cochrane, assistant Nick Kumpis, men’s club champion John Gilchrist, women’s champion Liz Slater and senior champion Bob Veeh.

Gilchrist won his third men’s championship last weekend, 1-up, in the 36-hole match-play final.

Kumpis, Cochrane and Veeh all played in last year’s Jones Cup at Mesa Verde Country Club. Mesa Verde won its second straight Jones Cup and has claimed three of the past five tournaments. Mesa Verde has four Jones Cup titles, while Big Canyon has six.

Scoring format is two best balls per fivesome. The Jones Cup features four Newport-Mesa-area private clubs: Big Canyon, Mesa Verde, Newport Beach and Santa Ana. It features the top players from those golf clubs. Each team is made up of five golfers, usually two club pros, a men’s champ, a women’s champion and the top male senior

Mesa Verde has part of its team ready with Tom McGreevy (senior champion) and Sally Holstein (women’s champion), head pro Tom Sargent said.

Santa Ana is seeking its first Jones Cup championship.

Pelican Hill Golf Club will host ladies golf days and junior camps beginning in June.

Full-day sessions offer women a three-hour small group instruction with certified PGA professionals teaching chipping, pitching, sand play, full swing and putting. Students will also play nine holes on one of Pelican Hill’s two courses.

There is complimentary lunch and a 20% discount for golf shop merchandise. Cost is $595 per player. Class sizes have a maximum of four players. Dates are: June 3, 5, 10, 12; July 9, 10; Aug. 13, 14; and Sept. 10, 11.

Four-day camps for juniors begin June 27. The camps are for players ages 7 to 13; class sizes are capped at 10 students. Glenn Deck, Pelican Hill’s director of instruction, will teach putting, full swing, short game, rules and etiquette.

Camps start at 9 a.m. and end at noon each day. Dates are: June 27-30; July 11-14, 18-21, 25-28; and August 1-4, 8-11, 15-18. Cost is $375 per player.

Pelican will also hold half-day schools for putting, chipping/pitching and bunker play, and full swing from June to September.

Jake Knapp, a junior on the Estancia High boys’ golf team, had an impressive streak end March 30.

He was the medalist in each match 27 straight times, dating back to last year. He finished second against Loara, but the Eagles still won, 195-217.

Perhaps Knapp is starting another streak. He has been the medalist in the three matches since heading into Monday’s matchup against Westminster. He did not play against the Lions, who the Eagles trounced to improve to 14-0, 11-0 in league

Markus Muller-Stach, the former Corona del Mar High basketball star (class of 1987), is putting on a special golf event in honor of his mother, Edith Muller-Stach.

Edith’s fifth annual Benefit for Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation is scheduled for Aug. 15 at Aliso Viejo Country Club.

Edith Muller-Stach provided leadership and direction for the Orange County Junior All-American Football program as Newport Beach chapter president and Orange County athletic director.

All proceeds for the golf event go to support the JDRF.
