Vanguard splits doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Vanguard split Saturday’s Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader, winning Game 1 against Biola, 7-2, before falling in the second game, 4-3.

Patricia Olvera got the win in Game 1 for the Lions, scattering seven hits in 5 1/3 shutout innings. Ariana Atwater (two runs) and Kaysie Flasck (two runs batted in) each had two hits and Angela St. Croix had two more RBIs.

Flasck was three for three with two RBIs in the second game, in which the Lions left the tying run at second base to end the game.

Vanguard is 21-21, 2-10 in conference. Biola is 24-20, 5-7.

MEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 9, Hope International 0

COSTA MESA — Vanguard won all nine matches and all 15 sets played in the Golden State Athletic Conference match Saturday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Lucas Pereira, Yahor Kryvaruchka, Sandro Bucher, Robin Wagner, Alexandre Piccin and Radek Rosiak all won in singles. The doubles teams of Pereira and Piccin, Kryvaruchka and Garrett Gillon, as well as David Crossland and Jared Reynolds, were all victorious.

Vanguard is 6-11, 4-7 in conference.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 9, Hope International 0

COSTA MESA — Like their male counterparts, the Lion women also swept every set in the Golden State Athletic Conference victory Saturday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Singles players Gabriela Bergmanova, Kateryna Malakhova, Anna Valingsten, Ekaterina Gabashvili, Brittnie Furuvald and Ashley Tebeau all won. In doubles, the teams of Bergmanova and Malakhova, Valingsten and Gabashvili, as well Furuvald and Teresa Odera, were all victorious.

Vanguard improved to 10-7, 8-5 in conference.

Men’s Golf

ASU Thunderbird Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. — The UC Irvine men’s golf team is 10th after two rounds Saturday at the 39th annual ASU Thunderbird Invitational at Karsten Golf Course.

Sophomore Jerry He leads UCI with a 143, good for 19th place. He fired a two-under 69 in the second round. As a team, UCI has a two-round score of 583. USC leads the way with a 558.

Women’s Water Polo

UC Irvine 9, UC Davis 7

DAVIS, Calif. — The Anteaters improved to 15-8 on the season with a victory in the Big West Conference opener against No. 17 UC Davis (16-10)

Caitlin Haskell and Olivia Cummins led No. 10 UCI with two goals apiece. Cortney Collyer, Katie Croghan, Jessy Cardey, Danielle Warde and Hannah Croghan added a goal apiece and Lauren Davies added eight saves in the cage.
