High School Roundup: Estancia takes down Laguna

The Estancia High boys’ tennis team knew it needed to win Tuesday to have any shot at earning a share of the Orange Coast League championship.

Thanks in much part to a sweep from their No. 1 doubles team, the Eagles earned a huge 10-8 victory at Laguna Beach. Estancia (13-5) and the Breakers are tied for first place in the league standings at 5-1.

The win was a bit of an upset as the Eagles are ranked No. 5 in CIF Southern Section Division 4 and Laguna Beach is No. 2

Matt Thomas and Robert Marrone swept at No. 1 doubles, 7-5, 6-4, 6-0 for Estancia, which plays host to Godinez on Thursday.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Newport Harbor def. Marina

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior Kevin Rakestraw had 17 kills to lead the host Sailors to a 25-22, 25-17, 25-11 Sunset League sweep on Tuesday.

Senior Steven Duhoux had 35 assists and junior Clay Carr added 11 kills for the Tars (13-5, 4-1 in league), who visit Los Alamitos on Wednesday.

IRVINE — Ryan Moss had 16 kills to help lead the Sea Kings to a 25-17, 25-13, 25-17 Pacific Coast League win Tuesday.

Ryan Clayton had eight kills and Joey Martino had six kills for CdM (11-7, 5-0 in league), which plays host to Northwood Wednesday.

Saddleback def. Estancia

COSTA MESA — Jacob Sperling had seven kills for the Eagles (0-8, 0-5 in Orange Coast League) Tuesday.

Saddleback won, 25-23, 25-15, 25-21.

BASEBALL

Sage Hill 20, Brethren Christian 3

NEWPORT COAST — Ryan Fishel, Kellen Ochi and Max Strohman belted out two hits each as part of the Lightning’s 12-hit attack in the Academy League game Tuesday.

Fishel and Harrison Rhee had four RBIs each for Sage Hill.

University 2, Corona del Mar 1

IRVINE — The Trojans scored two runs in the final two innings to overcome a 1-0 deficit and win the Pacific Coast League game Tuesday.

Brett Olson had a triple and drove in Wyatt Zalewski, who doubled in the fifth inning for CdM (5-11, 1-5 in league).

The Sea Kings’ Dash Johnson pitched a complete-game, five-hitter with five strikeouts,

CdM plays host to Uni on Friday.

Laguna Beach 7, Estancia 3

COSTA MESA — Levi Stillman went three for three with a double and a run batted in for the Eagles in the Orange Coast League game Tuesday.

Alex Chairez went two for three with two doubles and a run scored for Estancia (10-6, 3-3 in league).

Tyler Rios (1-2) pitched five innings, giving up nine hits and six earned runs. He struck out two.

The Eagles play host to Laguna beach Friday at 3:15 p.m.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Newport Harbor 13, Marina 5

NEWPORT BEACH — Reese Stalder swept at No. 1 singles, dropping just two games for the Sailors in the Sunset League match Tuesday.

Sean Perrier and Garrett Byers swept at No. 1 doubles for Newport Harbor (11-6, 4-1 in league). The No. 2 doubles team of Michael Edder and David Schaefer and the No. 3 doubles team of Adam Josephson and Phillip Vu both won two of three for the Sailors, who play at Los Alamitos on Thursday.

IRVINE — Alec Adamson swept at No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, 6-1, and improved to 37-3 on the season for the Sea Kings in the Pacific Coast League match Tuesday.

Freshmen Bjorn Hoffman (6-3, 6-2, 6-0) and Pedro Fernandez (6-3, 6-4, 6-1) also swept in singles for CdM (13-1, 4-1 in league), which plays at University on Thursday.

NEWPORT BEACH — Brad Tapfer shot one-over-par 37, the low for the Sailors in the Sunset League match Tuesday at Big Canyon Country Club.

Mason Moody (39), Landon Knight (39), Danny Willett (42), Thomas Terry (45) for Newport Harbor (10-2, 4-1), which is tied for first place in league after the first round of league play.

Marina’s Ramiz Jamal earned medalist honors after shooting for par.

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Sushil Bhakta shot 10-over-par 46, the low for the Mustangs in the Orange Coast League match Tuesday at Mile Square Golf Course.

Costa Mesa is 2-11, 0-6 in league.

Ocean View 130, Estancia 34

HUNTINGTON BEACH — John Leal recorded a personal-best in the 100-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 4.08 seconds for the Eagles in the nonleague meet Tuesday.

Mario Mendez had a personal record in the 100 free at 1:03.45 for Estancia (0-8), which competes against Godinez at Santa Ana Valley Wednesday at 6 p.m.
