College Roundup: OCC crew wins Palmer Cup

NEWPORT BEACH — The Orange Coast College men captured the Palmer Cup as the top team of the 47th annual event, winning four of six races Saturday

The OCC varsity eight won a close race, finishing in 6 minutes, 1.1 seconds. University of San Diego was second in 6:01.3 and UCLA was third in 6:02.2. The Pirates won the Norman E. Watson Cup for finishing first.

“It was a great day for our rowers and that varsity eight finish was something special,” OCC men’s crew coach Paul Prioleau said. “We really got our team up and peaking for last week’s San Diego Crew Classic, so for us to keep that intensity this week was great to see.”

In the novice eight race, the Pirates posted a five-second win over UC Irvine to win the Frank Marscellas Cup in 6:04.5.

In the second novice eight competition, OCC won the Condon G. Johnson Cup in 6:10.8.

OCC also won the novice four race in 6:36.2.

On the women’s side, OCC won the Collins Cup for winning the varsity eight race in 7:18.1, while UCI was second in 7:27.2.

BASEBALL

Cal Poly SLO 8, UC Irvine 1

SAN LUIS OBISPO — The Anteaters were swept in a Big West Conference series for the first time since 2006, a span of 48 straight series, Saturday at Baggett Stadium.

UCI (17-12, 3-3 in conference) gave up four runs in the first inning. The Anteaters’ lone run came in the fifth when Jerry McClanahan scored on Tommy Reyes’ sacrifice fly with the bases loaded. Jordan Fox had two hits for UCI.

The Mustangs, who beat the Anteaters, 3-2, Friday, are 20-10, 4-2.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 5, UC Riverside 2

IRVINE — Fabian Matthews won at No. 1 singles and also won at No. 3 doubles with Shuhei Shibahara during the Anteaters’ Big West Conference win Saturday.

Sam Gould (No. 2), Jacob Jung (No. 3) and Shibahara (No. 5) also won in singles for UCI (4-15, 1-1 in conference).

The Highlanders are 6-13, 0-1.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 10, UC Davis 4

IRVINE — Jessy Cardey, Katie Croghan, Hannah Croghan and Michaela Pierandozzi scored two goals each for the Aneaters in the Big West Conference game Saturday.

Goalie Kate Avetoom had 10 saves for UCI (20-5, 3-0 in conference), which won its eighth straight game.

UC Davis is 13-12, 1-1.

MEN’S GOLF

ASU Thunderbird Invitational

TEMPE, Ariz. — UC Irvine finished 12th Saturday at Karsten Golf Course.

The Anteaters completed the 54-hole event with a total of 885. California won the 17-team tournament with a score of 835 while San Diego State and New Mexico tied for second at 843.

Derek Ernst of UNLV, with a 68 in the final round, was medalist at nine-under-par 204, two shots ahead of Arizona State’s Austin Quick.

UCI sophomore Allan Jun shot a one-under 70 Saturday to finish 28th with a three-round score of 218. Redshirt freshman Pete Fernandez placed 38th at 221 after a 77 in the last round.

Junior Michael Yang finished with a 76 to place 56th at 224, redshirt sophomore Ryan Knapp (75) was 68th at 228 and sophomore Zack Duan (72) placed 70th at 229.

The ‘Eaters are back in action at the 66th annual Western Intercollegiate next Saturday and Sunday at Pasatiempo Golf Course in Santa Cruz.
