MALIBU — Senior All-American opposite Carson Clark had a match-high 24 kills and hit .500 to help the visiting Anteaters top the Waves, 25-22, 25-22, 23-25, 17-25, 15-12, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match Thursday.

The victory propels No. 2-ranked UCI (20-4, 16-4 in the MPSF) into a a first-place tie with BYU in the conference standings heading into the ‘Eaters match Saturday at No. 1-ranked USC.

Sophomore outside hitter Jeremy Dejno had 13 kills and junior outside hitter Kevin Tillie added 12 as UCI junior setter Chris Austin had a career-high 60 assists.

UCI is 9-0 on the road this season.

No. 6-ranked Pepperdine is 13-12, 8-11.

BASEBALL

Cal Poly SLO 6, UC Irvine 0

SAN LUIS OBISPO — For the first time in 26 Big West Conference series, the Anteaters faltered in the opening game on Thursday against the Mustangs.

Senior shortstop D.J. Crumlich went three for four and senior center fielder Christian Ramirez was two for four to pace the Anteaters’ eight-hit attack. It’s the first time UCI has been blanked this season.

Cal Poly (18-10, 2-2 in conference) scored four in the second and two in the fifth, as UCI starter Andrew Thurman gave up seven hits in six innings to fall to 2-2.

Three UCI relievers combined for three shutout innings, giving the UCI bullpen 25 2/3 innings pitched with just one earned run allowed in the last five games.

UCI (17-10, 3-1), ranked No. 29 by Collegiate Baseball, had won three straight and eight of its last nine coming in.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 7, UC Riverside 0

IRVINE — The Anteaters swept all six singles matches and all three doubles sets in their final regular-season home match of the season against a Big West Conference rival on Thursday.

Seniors Courtney Byron and Hannah Holladay won in singles and doubles, while senior Stephanie Hammel was a singles winner for UCI (13-5, 5-1 in conference).

Orange Coast 8, Irvine Valley 1

COSTA MESA — Krystal Hernandez, Nory Call, Nicole Pham and Remi Sutton won in singles and doubles to lead the host Pirates in the Orange Empire Conference match Thursday.

OCC improved to 7-2.

MEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 4, Loyola Marymount 3

LOS ANGELES — Fabian Matthews won in singles and doubles to lead the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference match Thursday.

Matthews, a Corona del Mar High product, was one of four singles winners for UCI (3-15), which lost the doubles point to the Lions (8-10).

Sam Gould, Jacob Jung and Mika DeCoster also won singles matches for UCI.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

SAN MARCOS — Freshman Haley Croce went a combined two for five with one run batted in and freshman Brittany Boggs had two hits as the visiting Lions fell, 2-1 in Game 2, after dropping a 6-1 verdict in the opener of two nonconference contests at Cal State San Marcos on Thursday.

Rachel Stalford limited the hosts to seven hits and two runs in Game 2.

Vanguard is 27-20.

San Marcos is 38-3.
