High School Roundup: CdM sweeps Estancia

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Corona del Mar High swept the doubleheader, beating Estancia, 15-5, in a five-inning opener before blasting the Eagles, 13-1, in a two-inning second game.

CdM senior Delaney Owen pitched the opener for the Sea Kings and also went two for two with two runs batted in. Keaton Gaughan was two for three with two RBIs, and Taryn Maister was three for four with a triple and two RBIs. Lindsey Susolik added a home run for CdM (9-6), and Annie Sperr was one for three with an RBI.

Rachelle Reynolds had a home run for the Eagles.

The Sea Kings had just three hits in the second game but were walked 10 times. Jordan Meyers had a double and three RBIs for CdM, and Mylie Wilson also had a hit and a pair of RBIs. Wilson also earned the win on the mound for the Sea Kings, who open Pacific Coast League play Tuesday at Northwood.

BOYS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Triton Invitational

SAN CLEMENTE — Newport Harbor High senior Ethan Cochran won the discus event at Saturday’s meet at San Clemente High.

Cochran won the discus in a meet-record 201 feet even. Teammate Steve Michaelsen was second with a 185-1, which moves him into second place in the state behind Cochran.

Newport also swept the top four spots in the shot put behind first-place Michaelsen (58-3), Cochran (56-6), Javier Venegas (55-1) and Marty Taylor (52-7).

Fritz Howser won the pole vault for Newport (14-6), and Tala Teaupa, Cameron Cuevas, Dane Palanjian and Titus Hasson combined to take second in the 4x200 relay (1:33.97). The Sailors’ distance medley relay team of Jason Moreno, David Vorona, Raul Padilla and Jake Barber was third in 11:04.28. Barber also placed fifth in the 200, in 2:03.45.

GIRLS’ TRACK AND FIELD

Triton Invitational

SAN CLEMENTE — Newport Harbor High junior Paige Tennison won the 3,200 meters in 10 minutes, 41.33 seconds Saturday at San Clemente High.

Peri Howser was second in the pole vault, clearing 10-6 for the Sailors.

GIRLS’ DIVING

Mission Viejo Invitiational

MISSION VIEJO — Corona del Mar High junior Katherine Myers and freshman Tabitha Krebs both earned automatic CIF qualifying scores Saturday at Mission Viejo High.

Krebs scored 442.76 in the 11-dive meet, and Myers scored 407.37. The cutoff score they had to each was 380.
