College Roundup: UCI shuts out USC

UC Irvine 4, USC 0

LOS ANGELES — Sophomore left-hander Matt Whitehouse struck out four, allowing no runs and three hits in 4 2/3 innings to help the Anteaters snap a four-game losing skid Tuesday at Dedeaux Field.

It was Whitehouse’s first win of the season. Brian Hernandez went one for two with two runs batted in and two runs scored for UCI (15-6). Drew Hillman and Jordan Leyland each drove in a run for the Anteaters, who snapped a 28-inning scoreless streak in the top of the third inning.

USC is 9-16.

UCI opens Big West Conference play Friday at home against Cal State Northridge at 6:30 p.m.

WOMEN’S GOLF

Anteater Invitational

DOVE CANYON — UC Irvine senior Patty Chawalitmetha tied for fourth (74-75-72-218) to help the Anteaters finish third at Dove Canyon Country Club Tuesday.

Portland State won with a three-round total of 890 (296-298-296). The Vikings’ Lauren Taylor was the medalist after carding a 218 (71-72-75).

Chawalitmetha posted her second straight top-five finish. UCI shot rounds of 301-305-293 for 899.

Sophomore Michelle Park was seventh at 222 (75-74-73), while freshman Taryn Yee was tied for 16th at 228 (75-79-74). Junior Lalita Patipaksiri finished in a tie for 20th with a 229 (77-78-74) and freshman Ronnie Valerio shot three rounds of 78 and was tied for 29th at 234.

The Anteaters will compete at the Big West Championships April 17-19 at Tijeras Creek Golf Course.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 8, Westmont 1

SANTA BARBARA — No. 1 singles player Gabriela Bergmanova led five wins at singles for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match at the Abbott Tennis Courts Tuesday.

Anna Valingsten (No. 3), Ekaterin Gabashvili (No. 4), Brittnie Furuvald (No. 5) and Ashley Tebeau (No. 6) also won in singles for Vanguard (8-5, 6-4 in conference), ranked No. 10 in the NAIA.

Westmont, ranked No. 25, is 4-11, 4-7.

MEN’S TENNIS

Westmont 6, Vanguard 3

SANTA BARBARA — No. 5 singles player Radek Rosiak grabbed the lone singles win for the Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match at the Abbott Tennis Courts Tuesday.

Vanguard (5-10, 3-6 in conference), ranked No. 12 in the NAIA, won twice in doubles.

Westmont, ranked No. 7, is 7-5, 5-4.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

AZUSA — Host Azusa Pacific scored in the sixth to break a 2-2 tie and complete a Golden State Athletic Conference sweep of Vanguard on Tuesday.

Kari Bergerson went three for four with one run batted in and Amanda Young was two for three with one RBI for the Lions in the second game, won by APU, 3-2.

APU (19-13, 4-2 in conference), won the first game, 3-0.

Bergeson was among five Lions with one hit in Game 1.

Vanguard is 19-17, 0-6.

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Columbia College of Missouri senior Valerie Teter threw a perfect game to allow the No. 12-ranked Cougars to earn a nonconference split Monday at Vanguard University.

Teter struck out six to improve to 9-4. It was her second perfect game this season.

Katherine Jablonsky pitched a five-hit shutout in a 2-0 Game 1 win for the Lions, who Vanguard had just three hits.

Jablonsky struck out five to improve to 5-4.

Columbia improved to 14-7.
