College Roundup: McClanahan’s single leads UCI to win in 10th inning

BASEBALL

UC Irvine 5, Cal State Bakersfield 4 (10 innings)

BAKERSFIELD — Sophomore Jerry McClanahan’s two-out single plated Connor Spencer with the winning run in the 10th inning to lead the visiting Anteaters in the nonconference game Tuesday.

Spencer, who was two for three with two runs scored, walked to start the winning rally, after UCI closer Race Parmenter blew a save in the ninth to allow the Roadrunners to pull even, 4-4.

Spencer advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Ronnie Shaeffer and made it to third on a passed ball. After the second out was recorded on a groundout, McClanahan singled for the winning RBI.

Taylor Sparks, Jonathan Herkins and Mikey Duarte also drove in runs for UCI (16-5), which used six pitchers.

Mitch Merten earned the win in relief. Starter Evan Brock did not allow an earned run in four innings. He gave up four hits, walked one and struck out five.

CSU Bakersfield is 17-8.

UCI opens Big West Conference play Thursday, when it begins a three-game road series at UC Riverside at 6 p.m.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

FULLERTON — Rachel Stalford and Brittany Colenzo threw back-to-back three-hit shutouts to key visiting Vanguard’s sweep over Hope International in Golden State Athletic Conference play Monday at Craig Park.

Gabrielle Jackson drove in the lone run in a 1-0 first-game triumph, while the Lions won the second game, 2-0.

Jackson added a run batted in in Game 2, in which Kari Bergerson was two for four with one RBI to lead the Lions’ five-hit attack.

Colenzo struck out 10 to improve to 7-1.

Vanguard (24-15, 5-3 in conference) had six hits in the first game. The Lions’ eight-game winning streak includes five shutouts.

Hope International is 20-14, 3-5.

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Brittany Boggs and Shelby Kuryllo combined for eight runs batted in to lead host Vanguard to a nonconference sweep of Columbia College on Monday.

Kuryllo was three for five with five RBIs in the two games, while Boggs was four for seven with three RBIs for the Lions.

Brittany Colenzo and Rachel Stalford earned the pitching victories for Vanguard.

Columbia fell to 5-5.

MEN’S GOLF

Anteater Invitational

LAGUNA NIGUEL —- UC Irvine junior Travis Russell, a Newport Harbor High product, finished fifth to lead the host Anteaters to a third-place team showing at the 33rd annual event completed Tuesday at El Niguel Country Club.

UCI finished with a 54-hole total of 895, four shots behind first-place Long Beach State. Cal State Fullerton was second at 894 in the 11-team tournament.

Connor Campbell of Loyola Marymount was medalist with an even-par total of 216.

Russell shot 220, while UCI sophomore Pete Fernandez and senior Michael Yang tied for 10th at 223.

It was Fernandez’s fourth top-10 showing this season, Russell’s third and Yang’s second.

Freshman Jacob Schulze (24th at 229) and junior Allan Jun (34th at 233) also scored for UCI.

It was UCI’s fifth top-five finish in 10 tournaments this season. The ‘Eaters return to action in the Western Intercollegiate April 13-14 at Pasatiempo Golf Club in Santa Cruz.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

UC Irvine 5, Wyoming 2

IRVINE — Kristina Smith, Franziska Goettsching, Sarah Gong and Ali Facey won in singles and doubles to pace the host Anteaters in the nonconference match Sunday.

Smith and Goettsching won at Nos. 1 and 3 singles, respectively, and combined for a triumph at No. 1 doubles.

Gong and Facey won at Nos. 4 and 5 singles, respectively, and teamed up for a victory at No. 3 doubles.

UCI, ranked No. 23, improved to 15-3.

Wyoming fell to 7-7.

Wisconsin-Whitewater 8, Vanguard 1

COSTA MESA — Juliet Labarthe won at No. 1 singles to earn the lone point for the host Lions in the nonconference match Tuesday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

The No. 11-ranked Lions fell to 7-13.

Whitewater is now 12-6.

MEN’S ROWING

Newport Regatta

NEWPORT BEACH — UC Santa Barbara won a tiebreaker to edge Orange Coast College for the team title in the 48th annual event completed Sunday.

The two teams each had 25 points, but UCSB was just more than one second faster than the Pirates in the varsity eight to claim the crown.

UCI finished third in the nine-team standings with 12 points.

OCC won the novice eight, the novice four, the second novice eight and the third novice eight in the eight-race event. OCC covered the 2,000 meter course in 6 minutes, 16.6 seconds in the novice eight and posted a time of 7:28.5 in the novice four.

UCSB’s winning time in the varsity eight was 6:10.4. OCC (6:11.8) was second and UC Irvine (6:15.7 was fourth).

UCI was also second in the second varsity eight and the second novice eight. OCC was second in the lightweight eight.

OCC will compete next at the Crew Classic in San Diego on April 6-7.

WOMEN’S ROWING

Berg Cup

NEWPORT BEACH — Host Orange Coast College won the novice eight race to highlight its performance on Saturday.

The Pirates were second in the varsity four and the second novice eight and were third in the varsity eight, completing the 2,000-meter course in 7 minutes, 3.7 seconds.

Loyola Marymount won the varsity eight in 6:45.5.

UC Irvine also competed, finishing fourth in the varsity eight and third in the second varsity eight.

OCC competes next in the Crew Classic, April 5-6, in San Diego.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Tri-Meet

MISSION VIEJO — Sabrina Howe won four individual events and Karen Silvas won two to help visiting Orange Coast College to a pair of victories in an Orange Empire Conference event on Friday.

The Pirates outscored host Saddleback, 104-41, and topped Santiago Canyon, 118-30.

Howe topped the field in the high jump (4 feet, 9 inches), the 100 hurdles (16.64), the long jump (16-8) and the triple jump (34-6 1/2).

Silvas doubled in the 1,500 meters (four minutes, 50.63 seconds) and the 3,000 in 10:36.33.

September Rodriguez (1:02.03 in the 400), Reanna Cortez (2:21.31 in the 800), and Cassandra Jacobs (108-9 1/2 in the javelin) were also event winners for OCC, which won the 400 and 1,600 relays.

Both relays included Rodriguez.

Tri-Meet

MISSION VIEJO — Orange Coast College athletes won six events to pace the visiting Pirates to Orange Empire Conference wins over Saddleback and Santiago Canyon on Friday at Saddleback College.

OCC won both meets, 98-56.

Cameron Pizzica 21 feet, 9 inches in the long jump), Darrin Halliday (156 5 3/4 in the javelin), Emanuel Valencia (43-1 3/4 in the triple jump), Weston Hall (1 minute, 59.06 seconds in the 800 meters), Jay Bonthius (4:03.88 in the 400) and Andy Bardine (15.77 in the 110 high hurdles) were all winners for OCC.

Bardine was second in the long jump (20-11) and third in the javelin (144-4 1/4), while Pizzica was second in the javelin (149-5 3/4).
