Vanguard University senior Sarah Boyd has been named second-team NAIA All-American in women’s basketball.

Boyd, a 5-foot-4 point guard who led the nation in assists (6.8 per game), averaged 11.4 points and 3.8 rebounds for the Lions, who finished 17-12 after advancing to the NAIA Tournament for the 10th straight season.

Boyd shot 40.8% from three-point range with 29 three-pointers. As a freshman, she helped the Lions win the NAIA national championship.

Boyd was a two-time All-Golden State Athletic Conference honoree. She averaged 7.5 assists in conference play, in which Vanguard was 11-8.

Vanguard senior Molly Pfohl received honorable mention. Phohl, also a member of the 2008 national title team, led the Lions with 15.5 points and 7.1 rebounds per game.

Pfohl, a 6-0 forward, was also an all-conference honoree.

UCI’s Jock honored

UC Irvine junior Charles Jock has been named Big West Conference Athlete of the Week in men’s track.

Jock won the 400 meters in 47.97 seconds in the Spring Break Invitational at Anteater Stadium on Saturday. He also anchored UCI’s 4x400 relay that ran 3 minutes, 15.71 seconds.

Cornell had about a 30-meter lead when Jock received the baton and he nearly caught the Big Red’s anchor at the finish line.

This is the fourth weekly conference honor for Jock in his UCI career.

Jock, who broke Steve Scott’s 32-year-old school record in the 800 last season, was 2010 Big West Athlete of the Year and earned All-America honors.

Matthews awarded

UC Irvine junior Fabian Matthews, a Corona del Mar High product, was named Big West Confernence Player of the Week in men’s tennis.

In the Anteaters 5-2 win against Wisconsin, Matthews extended his singles win streak to nine matches in his 6-2, 6-4 victory over Ricardo Martin at the No. 3 position. He teamed up with Ryan Cheung as the pair won their No. 3 doubles match, 8-5, over the Badger duo of Fredrik Ask and Alexander Teppert.

Matthews is 11-2 in singles. This is the second time he has won the award this season and the fifth time in his career.
