College Roundup: OCC baseball wins sixth straight

Orange Coast 5, Saddleback 3

COSTA MESA — The host Pirates erased a 3-2 deficit with one run in the sixth inning, then scored single runs in the seventh and eighth in the Orange Empire Conference game Saturday.

OCC (22-2-1, 9-1 in conference), ranked No. 1 in the state and No. 2 in one national poll, won its sixth straight. Eight of its nine starters got at least one hit.

Ben Agredano was two for four with a solo home run, while Chris Carlson and Justin Broussard had one hit and one RBI apiece for the winners.

Sophomore Josh Evans, one of three Pirates who combined for four shutout innings of one-hit relief, earned the victory.

Saddleback is 8-12, 3-7.

OCC visits Saddleback on Tuesday at 2 p.m.

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — The host Lions defeated Point Loma Nazarene, 7-5 and 3-1, to sweep in Golden State Athletic Conference action Saturday.

Brandon Young drove in two runs in each game to pace Vanguard (12-11, 3-9), which has now won three straight.

J.R. Bromberg allowed four hits and one earned run to get the Game 2 victory, after closing out the first game to earn the save and preserve Gabe Garcia’s win.

Eric Sanchez was two for three with an RBI for Vanguard in the opener.

Point Loma is 13-17, 6-11.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — The host Lions rallied twice to earn the sweep, topping Ottawa of Kansas, 3-1 and 2-1, in nonconference action Saturday.

Taylor Hallahan drove in two runs during a three-run fifth to erase a 1-0 deficit in the opener, backing Stacie Salazar, who allowed three hits and one run in a complete game.

In the second game, Rachel Stalford allowed three hits and no earned runs, going the distance to improve to 9-3.

Adriana Venezia and Stalford had RBIs for the Lions, who scored two in the fourth after Ottawa (11-14) scored in the first.

Vanguard is 21-15.

MEN’S TENNIS

Vanguard 6, Middlebury 3

COSTA MESA — Lucas Pereira, Roger Muri and Robin Wagner won in singles and doubles to propel the No. 6-ranked Lions in the nonconference match against No. 7-ranked visitors from Vermont on Saturday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Pereira earned a 6-1, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles and paired with Radek Rosiak to claim an 8-6 win at No. 2 doubles for the Lions (8-5).

Middlebury is 5-1.

Princeton 4, UC Irvine 3

COTO DE CAZA — The visiting Tigers claimed the doubles point to overcome singles wins by Anteaters Fabian Matthews, Sam Gould and Jacob Jung in the nonconference match Saturday at Coto de Caza Country Club.

Matthews also earned his team’s lone doubles win, pairing with Ryan Cheung.

UCI is 2-14 and Princeton is 9-8.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Middlebury 8, Vanguard 1

COSTA MESA — Gabriela Bergmanova earned the lone point for the No. 12-ranked Lions in the nonconference match against the No. 9-ranked visitors from Vermont on Saturday at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Bergmanova posted a 4-6, 6-1, 10-3 win over Lok-Sze Leung at No. 1 singles.

Vanguard fell to 5-7, while Middlebury is now 3-0.

Spring Break Invitational

IRVINE — UC Irvine senior Jacob Yowell had a record-setting day at Anteater Stadium Saturday.

Yowell set meet records in winning the 110-meter hurdles in 13.91 and the 400-meter hurdles in 51.81. His time in the 110 hurdles ranks second all-time at UCI.

Yowell ran the first leg of the 4x400 relay that finished second in a season-best time of 3:12.50. Cam Mitchell, Dominic Jester and Charles Jock ran the final three legs. Yowell also ran the anchor leg on the 4x100 relay that finished fourth in 41.29. Mike Kennedy, Chris Carson and Jester ran the first three legs.

Jock captured first place in the 400 meters in 47.07 and he ran the anchor leg on the 4x400 relay.

Freshman Riley Martin placed second in the 1,500 meters in 3:53.49 followed by teammate Nick Osborne in third at 3:54.01.

Alex Campbell finished third in the high jump at 6-4 ¾ while Kennedy was fourth in the long jump at 23-3 ½ and fifth in the 100 meters in 10.75. Stephen Brown placed fifth in the pole vault at 15-11.

Mitchell was sixth in the 800 meters with a time of 1:51.94 and Mason Miller placed sixth in the shot put with a mark of 53-2 ¼.

Andrew Snyder finished seventh in the 1500 meters (3:55.66) and Amir Shirif was ninth (3:56.40). Carson was ninth in the 100 meters (10.89) and Trevor Wightman placed 10th in the 400 hurdles (54.56).

The Anteaters compete in the Cal/Nevada Championships at Claremont Saturday and Sunday.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Spring Break Invitational

IRVINE — Junior Ericka Nowell and senior Amber Middleton led UC Irvine at Anteater Stadium Saturday.

Nowell won the 400-meter hurdles in a meet-record time of 59.18 and Middleton was second in 59.50 for the third-fastest time in UCI history. Kelly Collins finished ninth in 62.67 and KayC Wharton was 10th in 63.68.

Middleton was second in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.80 as she improved on her No. 2 time in the Anteater record book.

Middleton and Nowell ran the second and anchor legs of UCI’s second-place 4x400 relay that posted a season-best 3:45.40 with Wharton and Collins running the first and third legs, respectively.

Sanmisola George finished fourth in the 100 meters (12.30) with Martina Mickos placing sixth (12.41) and Breeanca Fleming ninth (12.45).

George was fifth in the 200 meters in 25.04 and Kira Helmer eighth (25.30).

Sakia Sailinuu finished eighth in the 800 meters with a time of 2:13.28 and Helmer was 10th in the 400 meters (58.06).

In the field events, Itos Aikhionbare placed fourth in the shot put with a mark of 44-3 ¼ as she improved on her third-best mark in UCI history. She was fifth in the discus throw at 138-10 while Christa Kondru was eighth at 127-9.

Jennica Smith finished sixth in the triple jump (34-9) and 10th in the long jump at 16-9 ¼.

Chelsea Pham was seventh in the javelin throw with a mark of 114-5 and Lauren Freschauf placed seventh in the pole vault at 11-2 ¼.

UCI competes in the Cal/Nevada Championships next Saturday and Sunday in Claremont.
