CdM Aquatics wins Turbo Cup

The CdM Aquatics 14U girls’ water polo team won the Turbo Orange County Cup gold division championship game Sunday.

CdM defeated Riverside WPC, 8-4, in the title match. The eighth annual Turbo OC Cup was played at pools around Orange County and included boys’ and girls’ teams at the 10U, 12U, and 14U age-group levels.

CdM won two games on Saturday and one on Sunday morning to advance to the final. In Saturday’s opening match CdM defeated Los Alamitos, 14-3. In the second game, the CdM girls beat Rose Bowl “B” 14-6 to advance to Sunday morning’s semifinal match against the Trojan WP Club. In a well-played game, CdM outscored the Trojan girls, 10-5.

Riverside beat South Coast WP, Anteater WPC and VC Premier on its way to the final before falling to CdM.

Matilda Bress, Eliza Britt, Heather Feibleman, Shannon Frome, Georgina Laube, Grace Morgan, Kelly Morgan, Maddie Musselman, Sammie Pratt, Heidi Ritner, Emily Ritner and Bridget Storm all contributed to the weekend victories.

The CdM Aquatics girls’ water polo club practices and plays games at the Marian Bergeson Aquatics Complex on the campus of Corona del Mar High.

Anteater takes first and third

The Newport Beach-based Anteater Water Polo Club’s 10-and-under boys’ group jumped up a division to 12U silver and grabbed the first-place blue-ribbon medals in the Turbo Orange County Cup. The Anteater 8- and 9-year-olds took third place in the 10U coed gold division.

The trip to winning the U12 silver boys’ division included a 22-3 victory over tournament host Kahuna Blue of Irvine, a 20-2 win against Newport White, a 17-4 win over South Bay and a 9-5 championship victory over Laguna in the final.

What was initially planned as a tune-up training run for the upcoming Junior Olympics this summer, turned into a pleasant drive to the gold medals for this group playing up an age-group division.

Coached by Jesse Briggs and Marc Hunt, the roster included Triton Scott, Shane Papa, Warren Loth, Connor McManigal, Cole Fisher, Brannon Syler, Kaveh Moadelli, Michael Paduano, Makana Sanita, Wyatt Genc, Spencer Wardwell and Caden Strauss.

The third-place U10 coed gold division Anteater squad defeated Huntington Beach 19-12, and OCWPC, 10-8. Their two losses were to first-place winner Elite, 14-9, and to second-place Capo Valley, 10-6. Coached by Briggs and current UCI player Derrik Jarvis, this group of Anteaters included Justin Cottrell, Sean Dannelley, Chloe Frerichs, Jonathan Lefebvre, Grant Loth, Kealoha Sanita, Nick Walkow, Sophie Wallace and Tristen Wardwell.

Mariners girls complete perfect season

The Mariners Christian “Black” girls’ volleyball team kept its perfect season intact by defeating Huntington Christian in the Christian Athletic League of Orange County’s Division II championship match held recently at Calvary Chapel.

The Dolphins were led by a talented group of seventh- and eighth-graders, who finished the season a perfect 10-0.

“I was really impressed with our girls ability to stay focused throughout the entire match,” Dolphins Coach Tim Bahadoor said. “After faltering a bit in Game Two. The team played fantastic all season and I couldn’t be more proud.”

Highlights included the excellent serving of Cassidy Kofoed and MaKena Martin. Alicia Muller and Peyton Espley-Jones were excellent at the net. Katya Hanessian’s court presence was extremely influential in the team success. Lauren Grable and Delaney Carroll were consistent and made key plays throughout the match. Mackenzie Morsey and Kendall Cosenza made big contributions to the team when they were inserted into the game.

Mariners boys post title win

The Mariners Christian sixth-grade boys’ basketball team managed a solid victory over Harbor Day School in the Christian Athletic League of Orange County’s Division I championship game.

The two teams split their wins during league play, both being very close. When it was over, the Dolphins won the title game, 60-48.

Colin Pipkin led all scorers with 17 points. Pipkin, who led his team all season long, was three for three from the free-throw line. Also leading the charge for the Dolphins was Seifu Peirce, who had 12 points and eight rebounds. Key rebounds and points down low were provided by Landon Monroe and Spencer Lawrence. Excellent shooting from Brock Malliett and Mark Schaefer kept the Dolphins of Mariners ahead throughout the game. Other key contributions came from Leyton Bond, Luke Seidman, Scotty Benson and Noah Van Mil.

The win gives this group of athletes its second championship of the year. This same group of boys also won the flag football championship back in November.

All-Star team wins division

The Newport-Mesa National Junior Basketall seventh-grade boys’ All-Star team won its Orange County Division and advanced to the NJB state tournament in San Diego.

The Newport-Mesa All-Stars beat Rancho Santa Margarita, 31-26, Aliso Niguel, 40-29 and Laguna Hills 46-40.

The Newport-Mesa All-Stars include: Mitch Dean, Adam Freeman, Jordan Hauser, Blake Kormos, Derek Mathuny, Harry Miller, Ford Secrist, Nick Sperr and Jake Whelan.
