Here is Principal Michael Vossen’s email sent to the parents of the boys’ basketball players at Newport Harbor High Wednesday night regarding suspending the program.

Re: Suspension of Boys’ Basketball Program

The Newport Beach and Huntington Beach Police Departments are currently investigating criminal threats directed toward Coach Larry Hirst and his wife, who also works at the school. Possible suspects at this time include individuals associated with the NHHS Boy’s Basketball program. The school is cooperating fully in this investigation as this is both a criminal and school related matter. Individuals found responsible for these acts will be prosecuted to the fullest extent possible under the criminal code and may also be subject to additional disciplinary consequences under District/school policy.

Due to the severity of this incident, and for the safety of our staff members, effective immediately the boy’s basketball program is suspended pending further investigation. During this suspension, student-athletes are to report to Coach Torribio’s classroom during periods 7 and 8. We will keep parents informed of next steps where appropriate.
