Timbers go with Thompson

UC Irvine forward Spencer Thompson was one of three players to be signed to the Portland Timbers of Major League Soccer, as announced by Timbers general manager and technical director, Gavin Wilkinson.

Thompson concluded his collegiate career at UC Irvine as a three-time All-Big West Conference honoree. A Hermann Trophy Award Watch List candidate, Thompson was also honored as a Big West Offensive Player of the Week and a San Diego Central All-Tournament member. He recorded 18 points on six goals and six assists and finished fifth in the UCI career annals with 67 points on 25 goals and 17 assists.

Thompson joins midfielder Rodrigo Lopez and defender Chris Taylor as Portland’s newest signees.

UC Irvine 5, Wisconsin 2

LAGUNA HILLS — No. 40-ranked Chris Kearney, the Anteaters’ No. 1 singles player, was one of five to win in singles in the nonconference match at the Nellie Gail Tennis Club in Laguna Hills Saturday.

Sam Gould (No. 2), Fabian Matthews (No. 3), Steven Henderson (No. 4) and Ryan Cheung (No. 5) also won in singles for UCI (9-5), which won its eighth match of the last nine.

Wisconsin is 6-8.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Tyson Leighton went three for three with one run and one run batted in to help Vanguard win, 5-4, in the nightcap to split the Golden State Athletic Conference doubleheader against Westmont Saturday.

Bryson Rahier went two fro three with two RBIs and one run, while Brandon Pesante went two for three for the Lions (13-13, 9-7 in conference) in the second game that goes seven innings.

Vanguard managed four hits in its 3-1 loss in the first game.

Westmont is 12-15, 5-11.

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

Spring Break Invitational

IRVINE — Golde Ibia and Alisha Misiaita won events for UC Irvine at Anteater Stadium Saturday.

Ibia won the 100-meter hurdles in 13.93 seconds.

Misiaita placed first in the shot put with a mark of 47 feet, 5 1/4 inches.

Vanessa Houston (12.12) and Breeanca Fleming (12.22) finished 2-3 in the 100 meters.

Sanmisola George finished second in the 200 meters with a time of 25.08.

Spring Break Invitational

IRVINE — UC Irvine junior Charles Jock won the 400 meters in 47.97 seconds at Anteater Stadium Saturday.

Colin Hacker placed second in the 800 meters with a time of 3:52.47.
