COSTA MESA — Chris Chiu swept at No. 2 singles, 6-0, 6-0, for the Pirates in the nonconference match Tuesday.

Dillon Nguyen won at No. 4 singles, 6-0, 6-1 for OCC (7-7).

Timothy Thai and Francesco Nguyen won at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3, and Timmy Pham and Nick Do won at No. 3 doubles, 6-0, 6-0, for the Pirates.

Vanguard 9 Hope International 0

FULLERTON — The visiting Lions, ranked No. 3 in the NAIA, improved to 16-0, 9-0 in the Golden State Athletic Conference with a commanding win on Monday at Cal State Fullerton.

Five Vanguard singles players dropped no more than two games in straight-sets wins, while Stefan Kilchhofer and Roger Muri teamed for an 8-2 triumph at No. 1 doubles.

Hope International is 3-10, 2-5.

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Host Vanguard dropped two nonconference games against Menlo on Monday. Vanguard dropped the opener, 5-3, in nine innings, and lost the second game, 7-3, in seven innings.

Thomas Mobley went four for seven with one run batted in in the two games for VU (12-17), for which Ellis Whitman was three for six with three RBIs.

Nikko Tauntas went three for five with one RBI and Vanguard teammate Jason Ochart went three for seven in the two games.

Menlo is 15-13.

UC Irvine 2, Nebraska 0

IRVINE — Junior Andrew Morales allowed four hits in 7 2/3 innings to help the host Anteaters win the rubber game of the nonconference series on Sunday.

Jimmy Litchfield and Race Parmenter each recorded two outs to complete the shutout, which helped Morales improve to 6-0. Parmenter earned his third save of the season for UCI (15-5).

Junior center fielder Dominique Taylor went three for four with one run batted in and scored the other run from the leadoff spot.

Taylor Sparks went two for three for UCI.

Nebraska fell to 6-11.

MEN’S ROWING

Dual meet

NEWPORT BEACH — Orange Coast College won the varsity eight, the novice eight and the novice four to highlight action in a season-opening dual meet against visiting UCLA on Saturday.

The OCC varsity eight boat, including Phil Dahlin, Cian Dowling, Jourdan Richman, Spencer Gilcrest, Austin Gentry, Kaleb Pritchett, Joe Morris, Ben Webster and coxswain Parisa Ali, finished the 2,000-meter course in five minutes, 54 seconds, one second ahead of UCLA.

OCC had to come from behind to win the varsity eight race.

The Pirates winning novice eight consisted of Ben Elsdon, Trevor Martin, Dan Emrich, Cody Raphael, Daylan Raphael, Kelly Murray, Anton Hedayat, Collin Griffitts and coxswain Armani Ferrante won in 6:05, 27 seconds better than the Bruins.

Angel Galvan, Joe Martin, Kyle Spreeman and Andrew Stanton represented OCC on the winning novice four boat, which bested UCLA by 25 seconds by finishing in 7:24.

UCLA won the second varsity eight race, while OCC won the second novice eight race.

The Pirates host the Newport Regatta on Sunday, beginning at 7:30 a.m.

WOMEN’S ROWING

Tri-meet

NEWPORT BEACH — Orange Coast College opened its crew season on Saturday morning with three races against USC and Chapman.

OCC won the varsity eight race, completing the 2,000-meter course in seven minutes, six seconds. OCC’s junior varsity was second in 7:35.

USC edged OCC in both novice eight races

OCC plays host to the Berg Cup on Saturday, beginning at 7 a.m.

SOFTBALL

Doubleheader

COSTA MESA — Host Vanguard swept Golden State Athletic Conference rival Arizona Christian, winning the first game, 10-0 in five innings and claiming a 6-3 win in the second game on Tuesday.

Sophomore Taylor Hallahan was three for three in the opener, while Kimberly Skoglund was three for three in the second game.

Vanguard improved to 20-15, 3-3 in conference.

Doubleheader

IRVINE — Host Concordia swept Vanguard in the Golden State Athletic Conference games on Saturday.

Concordia won the opener, 5-0, behind a no-hitter from Katie Cotta (10-1), and followed up with a 9-1 win to complete the sweep.

Kimberly Skoglund was one of seven Lions to get a hit in the second game. She also had the lone RBI for the Lions (16-15, 1-3 in conference).

Concordia improved to 23-2, 4-0.

Hope International 5, Vanguard 4

FULLERTON — Nina Pudar, Gabriele Alford and Anita Taranto earned singles wins for the visiting Lions in the Golden State Athletic Conference match on Tuesday at Cal State Fullerton.

Vanguard, ranked No. 11 in the NAIA, fell to 7-11, 4-5 in conference.

Hope International is 3-13, 3-4.
