Vetrovec tosses shutout to lead Sailors

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Junior Shaun Vetrovec threw a complete-game shutout in a Sunset League opener on Friday, allowing only four hits in eight innings and helping the Sailors win at Edison for the first time in Coach Patrick Murphy’s four seasons with Newport Harbor.

Vetrovec, who improved to 3-0 on the season, also drove in a run in the top of the eighth inning on a sacrifice fly.

The Sailors scored all of their five runs in the eighth. Paul Merino drove in two runs and Jake Norton drove in another for Newport Harbor (5-2, 1-0 in league).

Newport Harbor is at Fountain Valley on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

University 2, Corona del Mar 1

CORONA DEL MAR — Senior Dash Johnson went the distance in the Sea Kings’ Pacific Coast League opener on Friday, giving up five hits and four walks, while striking out four.

Hunter Heckendorn doubled, while Max Stone and Tyler Maloney recorded CdM’s other two hits, both singles.

The Sea Kings (3-4, 0-1 in league) play at Beckman on Tuesday at 3:15 p.m.

Orange County Championships

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Ryan Moss led the way for Corona del Mar, ranked No. 10 in the CIF Southern Section Division 1 poll, during the first day of the tournament by collecting 22 kills and helping the Sea Kings split their first two matches at Huntington Beach High on Friday.

Joey Martino finished with 12 kills and four blocks in the Sea Kings’ opening match, a 25-20, 19-25, 25-10, 25-17 victory against Santa Margarita.

CdM hung with Huntington Beach, ranked No. 5 in Division 1, before the Oilers rallied for an 18-25, 23-25, 25-12, 25-13, 15-9 win.

Matt Ctvrtlik finished with 42 assists and Brett Schisler with 26 assists on the first day for CdM.

Martino totaled 20 kills.

The Sea Kings (5-5) face the loser of Dana Hills-Esperanza at Edison High on Saturday at 9 a.m.

Orange County Championships

NEWPORT BEACH — Senior middle blocker Kevin Rakestraw combined for 34 kills in Newport Harbor’s two matches on the first day of the tournament on Friday.

The Sailors opened against Esperanza, which won, 25-19, 11-25, 25-18, 25-21. In Newport Harbor’s second match, the Sailors beat Fountain Valley, 21-25, 25-14, 18-25, 25-20, 15-5.

Clay Carr finished with 12 kills during the first day for Newport Harbor (4-3).

The Sailors resume tournament play in the consolation bracket at home Saturday at noon.

BOYS’ SWIMMING

Costa Mesa 98, Ocean View 72

COSTA MESA — Junior Tyler Connors earned a CIF Southern Section consideration time in the 100-yard backstroke with a 57.63-second effort in the Mustangs’ nonleague meet on Friday.

Connors also helped Costa Mesa’s medley relay finish with a CIF consideration time of 1:52.25. Nick Lewis, Victor Gonzalez and Justin Velasquez were a part of the relay.
