High School Roundup: Sailors upset Dana Hills

NEWPORT BEACH — Riley Robinson had five goals and two assists to help the Sailors earn the nonleague upset Wednesday.

Newport Harbor (2-3) is ranked No. 24 in the “Southern CIF” rankings by laxpower.com, while Dana Hills is No. 7.

Kole Escher (two goals, two assists), Matt Porteous (one goal, one assist), Brian Team (one goal, one assist), Jake Turner (one goal), Alex Opyd (one assist) and Ritter Hagedorn (one assist) also contributed on offense.

Goalie Christian Ruelas had seven saves. Luke Toohey won seven face-offs and had five groundballs, while Riley Peterson won five face-offs and had two groundballs for the Sailor, who play at Servite on Monday.

BOYS’ TENNIS

Estancia 11, Tustin 7

TUSTIN — Robert Marrone swept in singles for the Eagles in the nonleague match Wednesday.

Joseph Kidane won two of three in singles for Estancia (6-2).

The doubles teams of Matt Thomas-Erik Cerros, Francisco Alvarez-Kaimon Brust and Sterling Gates-Charlie Griffen each won twice.

NEWPORT BEACH — Robbe Simon swept at No. 1 singles for the Lightning in the nonleague match Wednesday at The Tennis Club Newport Beach.

The doubles teams of Alex Manolakas and Eric Magliarditi, as well as Ryan Lee and Sam Sherman, each won a pair of sets for Sage Hill (1-4).

The Lightning are next in the Corona del Mar All-American Tournament. They open against the host Sea Kings at 11 a.m. Friday at The Tennis Club.

Villa Park def. Estancia

COSTA MESA — Riley Stack had 10 kills for the Eagles (1-5) Wednesday.

Villa Park won the nonleague match, 26-24, 25-23, 25-21.

Sage Hill def. Ocean View

HUNTINGTON BEACH — Senior outside hitter Chris Zadra recorded 15 kills for the Lightning in a 25-20, 19-25, 25-21, 25-18 nonleague victory on Wednesday.

Setter Kent Kawaguchi had 26 assists and six kills for Sage Hill (5-6).

The Lightning open against Claremont in the Orange County Championships on Friday at 3 p.m.

Estancia 188, Fountain Valley 193

FOUNTAIN VALLEY — Eagles senior Jake Knapp was medalist with a two-under-par 34 in the nonleague match Wednesday at Mile Square Golf Course.

Jake Stone (37), Courtland Lee (38), Bill Crosson (39) and Davin Ortiz (40) also scored for Estancia, which improved to 6-1.

The Eagles play host to Lakewood on Thursday at Costa Mesa Golf Course.

SANTA ANA — The Mustangs swept their Orange Coast League opener in the tri-meet Wednesday at Valley High.

James Lewis won the 200-yard freestyle in 1 minute, 56.93 seconds, and he also captured the 500 free (5:19.70). Victor Gonzalez won the 200 IM in 2:16.68 and also won the 100 butterfly in 1:02.77.

Tyler Connors won the 100 back in 1:04.57 for Mesa, which also won all three relays.

Costa Mesa 87, Godinez 82

Costa Mesa 100, Calvary Chapel 18

SANTA ANA — Juniors Kellie Thorsness and Aubry Hill each won two events for the Mustangs in the Orange Coast League-opening tri-meet Wednesday at Valley High.

Hill captured the 200-yard IM in 2 minutes, 36.62 seconds, and also won the 100 fly in 1:10.81. Thorsness won the 50 freestyle in 25.14 seconds, a CIF Division 3 automatic time, and also won the 100 free in a consideration time of 57.57.

Katie Hill was second in the 200 free (2:17.97) and Devon Christiansen won the 500 free (6:40.07) for Mesa, which also won the 200 free relay.

The Mustangs play host to Katella on Monday.

LAGUNA BEACH — Maren McClanahan finished second in two events for the Eagles in the Orange Coast League opener Wednesday.

McClanahan finished second in the 200-yard individual medley (2:47) and second in the 100 butterfly (1:18). Sara Ray finished second in the 100 backstroke (1:16) for Estancia (2-3).
