Capistrano Valley Relays

MISSION VIEJO — Coroana del Mar won, edging out the host Cougars, 98-96, on Saturday.

The Sea Kings placed first in the 200-yard backstroke relay in 1 minute, 38.86 seconds. Ari Marks, Blake Motal, Evan Ramsey and Christian Garkani were on the winning team.

CdM took second in the 200 medley relay (Marks, Garrett Larson, Geon Woong Kim, Matthew Berry) in 1:37.50, almost three seconds ahead of Capistrano Valley.

Other runner-up finishes for CdM were in the 400 freestyle relay (3:16.60), which consisted of Berry, Bruce Bearer, Motal and Garkani, the 200 breaststroke relay (Kim, Bearer, Austin Beyaoju, Larson), the 300 free relay (Marks, Hayden Leach, Bearer, Ramsey, Garkani, Motal), and the 400 individual medley relay (Larson, Beyaoju, Berry, Kim).

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Best of the West tournament

POWAY — Corona del Mar High went 2-1 Saturday to finish fifth in the Gold Division, defeating Santa Barbara, 25-22, 19-25, 15-7, in the fifth-place match at Epic Volleyball Club.

Parker Brown had 12 kills, Jack Reed 10 and all-tournament selection Spencer Haly, a Stanford-bound senior middle blocker, had six.

CdM topped Long Beach poly, 25-15, 25-20, to start the day. Evan Dean had seven kills, Haly added five kills and three blocks, and Nick Curci had 19 assists.

Santa Margarita defeated CdM, 34-36, 27-25, 15-10, on its way to a title-match loss to Mira Costa.

Dean had 12 kills and Haly 11 against Santa Margarita, against which Curci had 34 assists.

CdM is 5-1.

Best of the West tournament

POWAY — Newport Harbor High finished tied for 11th after going 1-2 on the second day of action at Epic Volleyball Club.

The Sailors (3-3) lost their first Gold Division match of the day to Buchanan of Fresno, 25-19, 25-20. Cody Caldwell had 13 kills and Rusty Sary added seven.

Newport rebounded for a 25-17, 25-18 victory over Huntington Beach, as Sary has 12 kills and Caldwell nine. Max Richley had 12 digs and Kevin Rakestraw tallied three solo blocks.

The Sailors were topped by Crespi, 18-25, 25-22, 15-12, in their final match of the day, despite 16 kills from Caldwell, nine from Sary and 22 assists, seven digs and three solo blocks from Ian Sequeira.

Sequeira had 47 total assists in the three matches for Newport Harbor, which plays host to Santa Margarita on Tuesday.

Irvine Invitational

IRVINE — Junior Ethan Cochran won the discus throw with a personal-best mark of 183 feet, 9 inches Saturday at Irvine High. Cochran entered the week with the top mark in the state this seson (183-6).

Newport Harbor finished third as a team.

Mark Sakioka was second in the pole vault (15-1) after matching the three top finishers mark to tie the meet record.

Ryan Andrews was second in the shot put (57-2 1/2), while Stephan Vayda (6-0 in the high jump) and Steven Michaelsen (163-7 in the discus) both finished fourth.

Titus Hassan was fifth in the 200 meters (23.15 seconds).

On the frosh-soph level, Sailors Marty Taylor (49-3 3/4 in the shot put) and Landon Gyulay (39-6 in the triple jump) earned individual titles.

Irvine Invitational

IRVINE — Newport Harbor High senior Allison Krugman won the pole vault with a clearance of 11 feet Saturday to highlight the Sailors’ participation at Irvine High.

Sophie Evans was third in the pole vault (9-6).

BASEBALL

Whittier Chrtistian 4, Estancia 3

LA MIRADA — Matt Carlyle and Steven Macias each drove in runs with singles to tie things up in the sixth inning, but the Eagles dropped the third-place game in the Newport Elks Tournament Orange County Bracket in extra innings.

Coach Matt Sorensen said Estancia (3-2) committed an error in the bottom of the eighth, allowing the game-winning run to come across.

Estancia’s Sho Watanabe, a transfer from Newport Harbor, doubled. Sorensen Watanabe is coming of knee and finger injuries.

Costa Mesa 7, Century 2

COSTA MESA — Senior PJ Maloney went two for five for in the Mustangs’ consolation-round game in the Newport Elks Tournament Orange County Bracket on Saturday.

Tyler Sheffner was two for three for the Mustangs (3-2), who won their final two games in the tournament. Frank Farldow (1-0) picked up the victory in two innings of relief.

Costa Mesa is at Los Amigos Tuesday at 2:15 p.m.

GIRLS SWIMMING

Capistrano Valley Relays

MISSION VIEJO — Corona del Mar finished third 70 points.

University finished won with 116, followed by Santa Margarita (92).

The Sea Kings’ best event was the 200-yard butterfly relay, which they won in 1:46.87. Natalie Wong, Hollace Barden, Philippa Saunders and Brynne Wong played vital roles.
