UCI wins six events

WOMEN’S TRACK & FIELD

All-UC Meet

IRVINE — UC Irvine won six events Saturday at UCI.

Ericka Nowell (1 minute, 1.32 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles), Chloe Fata (4:35.47 in the 1,500), Golde Ibia (13.99 in the 100 hurdles), Madeline Leduc (40 feet, 4 1/4 inches in the triple jump) and Amber Sangster (152-4 in the discus) earned individual titles.

The 400 relay team of Vanessa Houston, Sanmisola George, Breeanca Fleming and Ibia won in 46.74.

Amber Middleton (14.19 in the 100 hurdles), Christa Kondru (41-10 1/2 in the shot put), and Houston (24.96 in the 200) finished second.

Houston was third in the 100 in 12.27, while Maggie Newton-Neal (800 in 2:12.60), Middleton (400 hurdles in 1:03.43) Kelsi Sando (5-3 in the high jump) and Leduc (17-11 in the long jump) also finished third.

UCI was third as a team, 29 points behind victorious UC Santa Barbara.

MEN’S TRACK & FIELD

All-UC Meet

IRVINE — UC Irvine junior Chris Carson won the 100 meters in 10.87 seconds and the 200 in 21.98 Saturday at UCI.

Other UCI winners were Sam Hyams ( three minutes, 51.18 seconds in the 1,500), Colin Hacker (8:23.61 in the 3,000), Andy Burich (9:16.87 in the 3,000 steeplechase) and Nick Jennings (16 feet, 4 3/4 inches in the pole vault).

Brennen Halliday (9:23.46 in the steeplechase), Cam Mitchell (1:52.86 in the 800), Freddie Gladney (110 hurdles in 15.36), Napolean Greene (53.39 in the 400 hurdles), and Matt Lahti (182-7 in the hammer throw) had second-place finishes for UCI.

Anteaters Trevor Wightman (55.37 in the 400 hurdles), P.J. Long (49.42 in the 400) and Victor Bonilla (8:25.21 in the 3,000) finished third.

Lahti was fifth in the discus (145-4).

UCI was third in the team standings, 70.5 points behind victorious UC Santa Barbara.

MEN’S VOLLEYBALL

USC def. UC Irvine

LOS ANGELES — The4 top-ranked host Trojans posted a 25-22, 22-25, 25-17, 27-25 win despite 27 kills buy UCI junior opposite Carson Clark in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play Saturday at the Galen Center.

Anthony Spittle had 58 assists and Jeremy Dejno had 123 kills for No. 7-ranked UCI (12-10, 9-7).

USC is 14-1 overall and in conference.

BASEBALL

Doubleheader

LAKESIDE, Calif. — Visiting Vanguard swept with a pair of one-run wins in Golden State Athletic Conference action Saturday.

Bryson Rahier went four for five with three runs batted in to key an 8-7 win in Game 1, while Kyle Hardman drove in two runs in a 5-4 second-game win in seven innings.

Gabriel Garcia allowed one earned run in 6 1/3 innings to get the Game 1 win.

Tyson Leighton had four hits on the day for Vanguard

San Diego Christian is 4-13, 2-8.

Santa Ana 4, Orange Coast 3

COSTA MESA — Three Pirates errors led to two unearned runs which proved to be the difference in the Orange Empire game Saturday at OCC.

It was the career victory No. 1,000 for Santa Ana Coach Don Sneddon, whose Dons improved to 12-5, 5-0 in conference).

OCC, for which Kevin Cho had three hits to help the hosts win the hit battle, 11-6, fall to 16-4, 2-3.

WOMEN’S WATER POLO

USC 14, UC Irvine 4

LOS ANGELES — Newport Harbor High products Kayleigh Gilchrist and Nicolina McCall scored one goal apiece for the No. 3-ranked winners in the nonconference match Saturday.

Four players had one goal apiece for No. 12-ranked UCI (10-7).

USC is 11-3.

MEN’S TENNIS

TCU 4, UC Irvine 3

COTO DE CAZA — The Anteaters had their seven-match win streak halted in the nonconference clash Saturday at the Coto de Caza Country Club.

Sam Gould and Fabian Matthews, a Corona del Mar High product, earned singles wins for UCI at Nos. 2 and 3, then both teamed with separate partners to win doubles sets to give the ‘Eaters (8-5) the doubles point.

TCU is 4-7.
