High School Roundup: Vetrovec stars in NHHS win

Newport Harbor 4, Katella 3

NEWPORT BEACH — Sophomore Shaun Vetrovec produced the game-winning, run-scoring single with two outs, two strikes and the bases loaded to wrap up play in the Newport Elks Tournament’s Foothill Division Friday.

Vetrovec helped himself improve to 2-0 as a pitcher after he gave up a 3-0 led over the final three innings. Sophomore Blake Pender pitched four scoreless innings for Newport Harbor (2-3).

Scott Steffel reached base three times. He scored two runs, stole two bases, recorded one hit and drew two walks.

The Sailors will play host to rival Corona del Mar in a doubleheader that starts at 1 p.m. on Tuesday.

Costa Mesa 7, Bolsa Grande 6 (eight innings)

COSTA MESA — Trace Curet had a walk-off RBI double in the bottom of the eighth, lifting the Mustangs in their final Newport Elks Tournament game in the OC Division Friday.

Curet was two for three with two RBIs for Mesa. Kory Bennion scored four runs, Austin McArdle was two for three with three RBIs and Justin Fisher was two for four with an RBI.

McArdle picked up the win for the Mustangs (2-3).

Corona del Mar 4, Ocean View 2

CORONA DEL MAR — Andrew McCormack, who singled in a run, improved to 2-0 after pitching five innings and allowing three hits to wrap up play in the Newport Elks Tournament’s Foothill Division Friday.

Brent Lawson had a double with two runs batted in and Max Stone singled in run for CdM (3-2). Stone also picked up his first save of the season after two innings of work.

The Sea Kings will play at Newport Harbor in a Battle of the Bay doubleheader Tuesday. The first game starts at 1 p.m.

BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL

Best of the West Tournament

SAN DIEGO — Parker Brown had 31 combined kills as Corona del Mar High won three matches Friday, winning its pool at Alliant International University.

The Sea Kings opened by defeating La Costa Canyon, 31-29, 25-17. Brown had 11 kills, Jack Reed had five kills and Remy Lamons added there kills and four blocks. Joe Ctvrtlik dished out 21 assists.

CdM then defeated Long Beach Wilson, 25-10, 25-15. Brown had nine kills, James Christian added four and Ctvrtlik had 18 assists. Brown and Reed each had 11 kills as CdM then beat Palos Verdes, 25-23, 25-21. Joey Martino had six kills and Ctvrtlik 25 assists.

Corona del Mar advanced to the top 16 and will play a Gold Division bracket match Saturday at 10 a.m. at Epic Volleyball Club.

Best of the West Tournament

SAN DIEGO — Newport Harbor went 1-2 and finished third in its pool at Alliant University Friday.

The Sailors (3-2) beat Buchanan of Clovis, 25-23, 25-19, lost to Servite, 23-25, 18-25, and lost to Oak Park, 23-25, 23-25.

Clay Carr had 17 kills combined in the three matches. Connor Leggett had 40 assists in the three matches. Kevin Rakestraw had six kills against Buchanan and three against Servite. Max Richley had six digs against Servite and eight against Oak Park. Chris Sheppard had six kills against Oak Park.

Newport Harbor continues play in the Silver Division Saturday at Westview High in San Diego.

BOYS’ LACROSSE

Newport Harbor 7, Tesoro 6 (3OT)

NEWPORT BEACH —Kole Escher scored the game-winning, sudden-death goal with 3:46 left in the third overtime for the Sailors in the nonleague game Friday.

Jake Turner had two goals, Ritter Hagedorn had a goal and the game-winning assist, Riley Robinson had a goal and an assist, Matt Porteus added a goal, Brian Team scored a goal and Alex Opyd had an assist for Newport Harbor (1-3).

Goalie Zac Vayda played through a sprained ankle and had eight saves and three takeaways, while Jack Murrel had four takeaways, four knockdowns and seven groundballs.

GIRLS’ LACROSSE

Corona del Mar 13, Tesoro 9

CORONA DEL MAR — Molly Rovzar scored four goals for the Sea Kings in the nonleague game Friday.

Tori Attyah had four assists and one goal for CdM (3-1).
