The St. Margaret’s girls’ soccer team, which features six players from Newport Beach, won the CIF Southern Section Division VI title Friday and is still alive in the CIF State Division III regional playoffs.

St. Margaret’s senior goalie Michelle Lancaster, senior defender Tory Davidson, junior forward Katie Donahue, junior defender Natalie Barbaresi and freshmen forwards Caroline Smith and Alexa Barbaresi all live in Newport Beach or CdM.

They helped the Tartans defeat San Dimas, 2-0, in the Division VI final Friday at Mission Viejo High.

The Tartans (27-2-1) haven’t lost in 25 games after winning at Central Valley Christian of Visalia, 2-1, in overtime Tuesday in the first round of the Division III regional playoffs.

Coach Johnny Marmelstein said Donahue assisted Maddy Glaser on the game’s first goal in the 49th minute, but Central Valley Christian scored the equalizer in the closing seconds of regulation.

St. Margaret’s scored the game-winner five minutes into the 15-minute sudden-death overtime.

Lancaster made five saves for the Tartans. Marmelstein said Tuesday’s win was the first for St. Margaret’s in the regional playoffs.

St. Margaret’s plays at top-seeded Flintridge Sacred Heart in a regional semifinal Thursday at 4 p.m. The Division III regional final is Friday.
