WOMEN’S BASKETBALL

Vanguard 75, Westmont 60

SANTA BARBARA — Senior Molly Pfohl had 20 points and seven rebounds and senior Sarah Boyd added 18 points and eight assists to lead the visiting Lions in the quarterfinals of the Golden State Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday.

No. 5-seeded Vanguard (17-11), ranked No. 17 in the NAIA, will visit top-seeded Azusa Pacific in one semifinal on Friday at 7:30 p.m. The Cougars (27-4) are ranked No. 3 nationally.

Phohl was seven for 11 from the field and Boyd was seven for 12. They combined to make all three of their three-point tries as Vanguard was 10 of 19 from beyond the arc (52.6%) as a team.

Vanguard shot 53.1% from the field overall.

Vanessa Farias came off the bench to lead Westmont (20-9) with 13 points.

MEN’S GOLF

Orange Empire four-way

SANTA ANA — Orange Coast College freshman Mike Squillace recorded a two-over-par 74 and shared medalist honors to help the Pirates win the Orange Empire Conference event at Santa Ana Country Club Wednesday.

Squillace finished tied for first with Irvine’s Crockett Stearns.

Orange Coast (3-1 in conference) finished on top with a 394, Irvine Valley was second at 398, Cuyamaca third at 400 and Palomar fourth at 407.

Matt Chan shot a 77 for OCC, followed by Josh Hurst (79), Jeff Fuzzard (81) and Tyler Paul (83).

The Pirates next play against Cypress at Strawberry Farms Golf Club on March 14.

BASEBALL

The Master’s 7, Vanguard 2

SANTA CLARITA — The visiting Lions were limited to five hits in the Golden State Athletic Conference game Wednesday.

Jacob Domingos had a double and a run batted in for Vanguard (7-8, 3-2 in conference).

TMC is 12-4, 3-0.

WOMEN’S TENNIS

Point Loma Nazarene 7, Vanguard 2

COSTA MESA — Visiting Point Loma won five of six singles sets in the Golden State Athlete Conference battle of NAIA heavyweights Wednesday at Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

Kateryna Malakhova won at No. 2 singles for Vanguard (3-2, 3-2 in conference), outlasting Ashley Litchfield, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5.

The No. 1 doubles team of Malakhova and Gabriela Bergmanova also got past Litchfield and Kristin Strimple, 8-1.

Point Loma (3-0, 2-0) is ranked No. 3 in the NAIA; Vanguard is No. 4.

MEN’S TENNIS

Point Loma Nazarene 5, Vanguard 4

COSTA MESA — Lucas Pereira, Yahor Kryvaruchka and Alexandre Piccin each won their respective singles sets for the No. 7-ranked Lions in a Golden State Athletic Conference event at Costa Mesa Tennis Center on Wednesday.

Pereira and Robin Wagner won in the No. 1 doubles for Vanguard (2-6, 1-3 in conference).

Point Loma Nazarene, ranked No. 10, improved to 5-0, 3-0.
